Chassis Kit Ordered!! YAY!

Well i have done it! I have ordered a chassis kit from Pilgrim for their Cobra replica. The Cobra is to me the ultimate car and i have always wanted one so now i can live the dream and build one WAHEY!

I know it's not locost but it will be built on a tight budget. One day i'll have the nuts all out Cobra but untill then this will do just fine!!

Happy Happy Happy!!!

Keep it for a whole YEAR post SVA ??!!!??

That's a tad optimistic Ian!

It would be nice if he kept it for a week or two after SVA...and actually drove it out of his road!

Good luck with the build Andy-mate!

Erm, no they are certainly not crap. Just comparably expensive to get >300hp from. There's always a compromise. It depends what performance you want versus how much you're willing to spend. If you have the budget, go Chevy LS.

Love the RV8, especially in 5.0 TVR trim Although I now love my revvy fireblade engine, there's just something about a big lazy V8.

Perfect for....donuts

Best of luck with the build, i am assuming you have a build manual to get stuck into while you await the chassis so should get yourself planned ahead.

Did you buy a donor package from pilgrim for the running gear ?

well done, gotta admint I am jealous as I am starting to like the cobra shape, the early non bulgy withthe wires ....

re: rover v8. I don't think they are bad, or no worse than any other engine if maintained properly. What happens is that people don't do regular maintenance and then moan when the engine runs poorly - they can take a lot of abuse so rather then die, running on badly for a long time hence maybe for some of the comments?

they love regular oil changes, 5 k miles, no fancy oil either.

the 3.9 and large capacity have reputation for dropping liners - google for this - so if you are going for one of these, then fitting top hat liners is a prerequisite rather than face the consequences.

on the positive there are loads around and parts are cheap - the LR suppliers can supply a lot of it.

make sure you post photos as you go along.

Cheers Bob

Yes i did get a build manual and i have the 'A Car Is Born' DVD with Mark Evens to help me on my way. I didn't get the donor pack as i couldn't quite stretch to it but it will be ordered hopefully soon so it will be ready when i pick up the Chassis.

Humbug: Don't worry i'll pop you on the list I'll build a rack on the back for your Zimmer frame!!

Nowt wrong with the Rover V8.
OK expensive to get 300+Bhp.

A 3.5litre will give you plenty of performance. Just put a decent cam and a 4 barrel carb on it and it will go very well indeed.
Its only a few Kg more than a pinto, so a BIG weight saving over a V8 ford or Chevvy.
Nowt wrong with those engines either.

You will have a good while to choose and obtain an engine and box.
Just check out the exhaust manifolds and pipes before getting an Engine, as they are not cheap either.

Take your time, and get every little detail correct, then you will have a stormer of a car. Well worth the effort.
Not to mention the pride and chest swelling that goes with the "I built it myself" answer to peoples questions.

I have a Viento, and have had lots of people say "Nice Car mate" (Even the chavs have commented favourably).
So dont rush, and get it right first time. Its easier and cheaper, and gives you a better finish. You don't want to be filling up holes that your drilled in the wrong place do you etc etc.

Have fun and photograph the build, and put them in your archive for all of us to enjoy.

EDIT:
Why not get a 3 litre Granada / Scorpio Cosworth for a Donor?. 200BHP out of the box.
OK you wont have that Lurverly V8 burble, but the V6 dont sound that bad either.
Just a thought, and all from one Donor.

Nothing wrong with rover v8 but a supercharged jag v8 will easily give 400+ hp

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

i all so have gone down the chevy or the rover
the chevy is cheep power but you get a hell off weight
the rover is not as power full but a lot less weight to carry about
take your time disiding but for me the rover is the best
good look on your build and will hope to see some picks as soon as you get going

It's funny how some people immediately say things like "ooh do this, do that and you'll get 7 zillion bhp" I'm not after loads of bhp, i just want a reliable engine that can actually pull the skin off a rice pudding I love the sound of the RV8 and through side pipes it's gonna sound superb, although 175bhp would ne nice.

3.5Litre RV8, Viper hurricane Cam, Webber 4 barrel Carb, good exhaust manifold (mine are all pipes - see archive), a little easing on the inlet ports, and you should easily make 175Bhp.
Get a 3.9, 4.0, or a 4.6 and you will exceed that easily, and still have the weight advantage from the Alloy block

I'm with you on the power, you dont really need 500Bhp in a kit car, they are so light, you already have a weight to power advantage.

Me... I'm working on the next power gain for the Viento.... Not I need to Loose about 6-7 Stones. That will up the weight / power ratio a bit. ie remove about 1Cwt or 50kgs from the load

Andy-mate

I wouldnt bother with the donor package from pilgrim, i am sure we can find a column with all the switches and racks are reasonable new.

It would be better and easier to source a diff with the ratio you actually want/need for youe engine box choice, so i would collect seperatley although i know what you will do
