straight 6 options

Hi everyone,

Right a simple dilemma. I have a Tiger cat E1 and it works. The pinto is ridiculously highly strung and I don't really like it cos it always sounds like its about to blow up and at high revs it vents hot oil over the engine (and i get scared its all going to catch fire). I know someone would say to just take the race cam and twin 45's off but then it will be too slow. I really want a new engine. To make it simple all I want to do is find a complete engine and gearbox from a rwd donor car and just fabricate a new UJ on my existing prop and get some engine mountings made up.

The questions are:
1) Does anyone know anything about the toyota 5m-ge engine out of the 80's supra. Its 178bhp as standard which is the same as my pinto and shouldn't be too much weightier.
2) How would that compare to a BMW m50 engine or jag aj6
3) What do you think the extra weight would do to the handling
4) how do you make a new Hardy Spicer UJ and get engine mounts fabricated

Any help much appreciated

Cheers,

Al

all of those engines (to the best of my knowlege) are really heavy

plus they may not fit in the engine bay without extending a few chassis rails

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but its sinking, Racing around to come up behind you again, the sun is the same in a relative way but your older, shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Zetec has to be the best option surely?

All you need is the engine and possibly and ignition system (Megajolt?) and a new exhaust. Type 9 stays put.

1- Its big and heavy
2- Good comparison as they're also big and heavy
3-Fu#k it up completly
4a- Dunning and fairbank or reco-prop
4b- buy a welder and have some fun
learning to DIY.
I wouldn't suggest ditching the carbs, i'd suggest binning the lot and fitting a bike engine

Welcome aboard BTW.

I have a Supercat and just swapped the engine from Pinto to ZX-9R, also looked at the Zetec option but since i had to put TB's on it with a Megajolt because the original Injectionunit didn't fit i choose the Bike engine. (Also like the reving and sequential gearchange)

About the straight six i can tell you it will never fit and is besides that way to heavy we mounted on in our Viento and that fit's just fine, but then again what won't fit in that car.

So go ZETEC, 4AGE or BEC. In my opinion offcourse.

if it's anything like the 7mge in the mk3 supra, it's a massive engine!

it weighs...............well i don't know, but i imagine in the region of a small elephant. i have a head sat at home, from an engine we pulled out, waiting to be turned into a table and it's heavier than a pinto one.

the block is cast just like a pinto but with another 2 cylinders, so even heavier. the crank is 2 cylinders longer............

it's a backwards step imho. put an XE in it

The Pinto in a Tiger Cat has enough space to get a fag paper between the water pump and the springs (inboard suspension) you would never get another two cylinders in there and the tunnel is only wide enough to take the T9 box which is skinny. The Zetec, Duratec and 4AGE would get my vote ar very possibly a V6 Duratec but that is probably too wide.
