Anyone experienced with Lotus Elan +2's?
Just thinking about new project (to keep me off the streets but not watching Eastenders).
Seen a couple of old Lotus' - like the 70's styling and look "reasonably" simple mechanics wise. see
HERE for one on Ebay.
Anyone got any scare stories (eg price of parts or handling nightmares) or even positive things to say? Would a 6.5 footer fit in?
Cheers,
Mark (probably biting off more than he can chew!!)

Don't know much about them, but I've always liked the look of them as well. I'm not sure about the strength of the motor, and I
don't think its all that powerful in standard.
I read an article a couple of years ago about someone who fitted one with a modern power train, zetec and mt75 I think.
There's also a company that build a spaceframe chassis for it, think its one of the backbone type, i.e. all the strength is in the tunnel.
Can't remember name though. I think the body fits over the top with little or no modification.
That one on ebay looks good though, nice and original. If I had space, and cash, I might be quite tempted myself!

I may have to sell the locost to buy it though.
But i think my experience of that would help a lot in sorting the next project?
Anyone want to buy a locost? (not sure yet if I'm selling but there we go!)

A bloke I used to work with had one many years ago and it used to lose one of the knock on type back wheels on a regular basis. It also let water in
through the door gaps as they were rather wide.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I used to have a 2+2 elan, how Conrod said their slow, is very strange, the standard 1600 twin cam with twin 40" was great
probabley by modern terms, they will not be the quickest, but would beat any hot hatch with ease
they did have bad points
Conrods already mentioned brakes, mine were very mmmm different,
back axle on mine broke 3 times in about 3000 miles, and the rear axle drives thru rubber doughnuts, that were never designed to take that power (1600
twin cam on 40) so they broke on a monthly basis, they were easy to change but normally on someones driveway 30 miles from home
the 2+2 bit is a bit misleading as all you could use it for was a briefcase or 3 month old baby
My car was good fun, looked good, broke down on a daily basis.
some of the breakdowns,
brakes locked on (servo sticking)
no brakes at all (very frightning) never did find out why, but they worked the next day !!!
headlights dont go up at night, but during the day wont go down
electrical faults to many to mention
wheel spinners had a mind of their own
they came undone when you did not want them to, but on taking a wheel off they would not budge, I cheated on mine, by wire locking them to the
wheel
aprt from all of the above, i really did like my 2+2, but wife did not!!!!!

I've got one of them already - my locost
But only when its really important that it works ok. Eg the track day i was *meant* to go on last Saturday at Elvington. The f**ker.
