Calling all structural engineers

hi all

as part of my architecture course i have been assigned the task of designing a hotel for Aberdeen.

the site is on the edge of an old abandoned granite quarry. I've designed my hotel to sit within the top walls of the quarry as the top soil can be cleared away and the structure be built straight onto granite.

I now have to figure out the structure of my hotel and was wondering if there are any structural engineers that might be able to help me.

I have a good idea of how my structure will work but I've also got to show correct or at least near to sizes for columns and beams that make up the structure based on loads and other factors.

we have had little time with engineers coming in to our studio due to our class size so they haven't been able to help us individually. With what little time I did get with an engineer I was advised to use a steel structure with concrete floors.

i have CAD and SketchUp drawings of my site and hotel design and was wondering if anyone could help me with my calculations for the steel structure

If there is anyone able and willing to help i can send you drawings and go into more detail for the hotel im trying to design

many thanks

patrick

I assume this is Rubislaw Quarry???

Don't build it... the hotel will go bust when their clientele see how many people jump into the damn hole!

I don't know why they just don't fill it right up with water, it was still quite deep last time I look at it. Would make a fine boating pond or ROV testing area. I use to work in Seafield house offices that were next to it.

How about a hotel built into the hole that would be cool

I think there is an architects handbook that gives you the info needed for this type of work. I'll have a look in my collection and give you the name of it.

Neil: Yeah i believe they are looking to build more apartments there, Michael Gilmore Associates have been surveying the site for the past 10 years tho so dont know when or if they will get round to it.

Cars going fine thanks, its up in inverness in a mates garage for the winter, hoping to have it back for the summer, how is your car going? did you manage to sort your battery and alt problems out?

Hammerhead: ive a few books on steel structures but with all the different calculations needed they may as well me written in greek.
