Potential Bargain or Potential Disaster
After a very cheap 1st car and this is on ebay. within pushing distance of my house. bodyworks excellent, which is a change...
Qustion is Should I bother looking closer? I guess the worst case is it was running with no oil.

Potential disaster, unless you can go have a look first.
It could be the cambelt which means goodbye engine!!!!

Guess you need look what an equivelant Clio up and running, in the same condition is worth, deduct the price of an engine, and a couple of weekends to
get it up and running... If you could get it for £250 or so, you could break it and get your money back if all else failed.

Text of ad.
quote: We've owned this Clio from new and were looking to replace it this year. Sadly in early December 2007 it broke down, we had it towed to
our house and it has sat on the drive since then. We honestly don't know what's wrong with it and we've not been inclined to have it
checked or quoted for repair either.
The bodywork and interior are in really good condition; the tyres and spare are all OK and it has all four hubcaps (which Renault usually sell for
about £20.00 each!). The battery is now dead. MOT expires 29/3/08. It is now registered as SORN (off the road).
The car might suit someone as a project or if they're willing to break it down for spares and, is as a result, sold as seen. The buyer will need
to pay cash on collection and tow the car away.
Car is located in Crowthorne, Berkshire. Thanks for looking!
UPDATE (11/2/08):
I've been a bit overwhelmed with e-mails about the car so maybe I can address most of your points here:
The car just stopped when it broke down and wouldn't restart.
It didn't overheat (ever!).
There were no bangs or strange noises when it stopped.
The car was doing about 40mph when it stopped. Straight road, no bends or S-curves.
There's no rust anywhere on the car.
When it was working, all the electrics were fine and the heater worked.
The interior is cloth.
There's a CD player in the boot area, but it didn't work beyond a year/eighteen months.
Concerning a buy-it-now option, just make me an offer (I've have five requests for this!).
No, I cannot tow it to your location.
The engine didn't turn after it broke down...the battery is now dead.
Yes, there's petrol in it. It didn't run out of fuel.
I'd guess worse case is a seized engine, and it seems odd they've not even tried to get it going (or that's a lie and is just not
economic to repair).
Not turning over even when it had full battery doesn't sound too good - though it could just be a knackered alternator having drained the
battery I suppose.
But for the right price (i.e. what it's worth fixed - cost of a working scrapyard engine) it would be ok given you have the facilities for an
engine swap.

dunno what to advise.
look at the staining on the drive near the offside front wheel - is that oil? from that car? Are they telling the truth? OR know something you
don't?
worst case maybe complete engine and gearbox. maybe some engine management too.
the had it towed - by whom? AA? RAC? Then surley the man would have had a go at repainring it or worked out what was wrong - cam belt snapped?
How much will it all cost to put right?
Who can say.
How soon do you want to be driving it? How much time/money do you have to put it right? Can you put it right yourself at minimal cost?
97 Clio 1.1 can't be that desriable = cost a lot - how much is a working one?

How much is a running one?? Not a huge amount i'd guess. As mentioned - worst case is it would need a new engine to get it running..... but how
many issues might you find once it is actually running?? I think when looking for a really cheap car its much more important to get a proper test
drive to identify any issues that might suddenly bump the cost right up.
Personally i'd leave it.

That age of car is in the bargain banger bracket.
Full tax and 12 MOT worth £500
NO Tax or MOT worth nothing.

As above, French cars rubbish - sorry - are not very durable - if you want a small cheap reliable car get a japanese one.
I would avoid that one
Cheers

As above i'd have to agree. Anyone want to buy a W-reg Saxo VTR. Its had the clonky front suspension sorted with 2 new driveshafts, 2 new front
wheel bearings, 2 new springs (after 1 snapped!!), 2 new upper strut mounts, 2 new drop links, 2 new track rod ends and 1 new lower wishbone.
Never again will i buy a French car!!!
