406 2.0 petrol cambelt tension
I cant let it go any further, the cambelt needs changing on my 1996 406 2.0 GLX petrol.
I have tried to read through the Haynes manual, so tedious - refer to, refer to, refer to etc., and there nearly half a page on tensioning the
belt.
It seems the camwheels are independently adjustable for timing if I am reading it correctly, there are no pictures to refer to, I hate this book.
The Haynes wants a 'special tool' to measure the tension - surely this cant be right. Can I get away with the usual 'that feels
right' 45deg to 90deg finger and thumb pressure on the longest run of the belt. Am I missing something? Are they just covering their arse?
Can anyone give me any pointers?
Any help very much appreciated.

406 Cam Belt
I have changed mine a couple of times and it is not too difficult.
You need to follow the instructions about putting locking pins in place (6mm drills) to stop rotation and use a square key to turn the eccentric
idler pulley to tension the belt.
The most difficult thing is working in the confined space, against the inner wing.
Listen to the belt when first running the engine for signs of excess tension ans re-adjust if necessary.

I hate working in tight spaces, I think my next car will have to be a Vauxhall Omega with a 1.0 Corsa engine in, plenty room.
