How to spot a stroke
cut an pasted from an e-mail I've just been sent asking to pass it on, looked useful so I thought I'd stick it on here. I know there are
medical folk on here so I probably get a 'You ignorant fool!! That’s b%ll%cks it’s just spam!!' but feck it so please read below
especially if your feeling a bit crappy today and a hypochondriac -
For your information
STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters.... S.T.R.
My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I agree.
If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks. Seriously..
Please read:
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .....she said she
had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the
evening.
Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered
a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die.... they end up
in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this...
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally. He said the trick
was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe
brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke .
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 999/911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue
NOTE: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other , that is
also an indication of a stroke.
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

The chain mail is on snopes, but unusually the symptoms are apparently true.

If you get one with an additional bit about pricking fingers that's b%ll%cks.
p.s. being true doesn't prevent it being spam

The 'STR' thing is good - no disagreement there.
The 'a stroke can be reversed if you can get to a neurologist in 3 hours' bit is, unfortunately, not true. If a very few cases, if
presentation is fast (data best for presentation within 1 hour) and the stroke is of a certain type, then some drugs can help to improve the situation
in some people.....
Having said that, early and aggressive referral for stroke is important and the STR thing can only help...

I remeber when my wife had her strokw a few years back they were the first tests the doctors did with her, we were extremely lucky in that my wife
used to be a nurse and recognised the sumptoms herself and also very lucky in that she made a complete recovery from the stroke.

Sound correct to me, going from experience ,i suffered a mild stroke at christmas and am just getting over it, havent mentioned it on here before but
am now getting back to normal having just started back to work part time and getting back into doing things gradually.
I dont believe its possible to reverse the effect completely but as mentioned if treated promptly certain types can have the damage minimised with
certain drugs but dont think it is available routinely on NHS.
I am just accepting things are not completely the same for me at present and hoping the doctors can find the cause behind it as tests so far have been
a bit inconclusive.

I was told, by my dad that if someone suspects a stroke they should take 3 aspirin as it thins the blood and dilates the blood vessels, is that right?

No! There are two types of strokes:
Embolic- caused by a small clot from the heart or blood vessels in the neck going to the brain and depriving it of oxygen
Haemorrhagic- a bleed in the brain
Obviously if it's #2 and you take Aspirin (which prevents platelet aggregation, therefore thinning the blood) it'll get a lot, lot
worse.
Heart attacks, meanwhile, are embolic in nature so taking aspirin is okay (obviously not if the person is allergic to it...)...
the bit about 3 hours and guarantees is clearly bollocks.
Simple rule it this- if someone is walking strange, talking strange, confused or unconscious they need medical help If you're not sure what
to do speak to someone who knows what to do.....

hmm very good point about the bleeding, I can see how that would make things much worse
