DOH 1100miles
Man drove 1100 miles to buy car which belonged to his pal
A MOTORIST made a 550-mile trip to buy a particular model of car he'd set his heart on - only to discover it was the same motor he'd
admired for weeks in his home town.
And when Jamie Ball, from Fort William, went to inspect the Alfa Romeo in a Bristol dealership, he realised that not only did the previous owner come
from his own town, he was also his former business mentor.
The astonishing chain of events emerged when Jamie placed a deposit on the car and asked if he might be able to speak to the former owner.
Jamie said: "I was flabbergasted, to say the least, when I was told that the car had just been traded in by John Harvey - from Fort William.
"I know John well and he had been my mentor a few years ago when I got a grant from the Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust."
John is head of accountants JC Harvey & Company, while Jamie runs All-Round Signs.
Jamie added: "The reason I fancied the Alfa was because I had seen one in a Fort William car park and decided I'd like to get a similar
model.
"I like to buy locally wherever possible but actually getting an Alfa proved to be very difficult.
"At one stage, I even thought of placing a note on the windscreen asking if the Alfa in the car park might be for sale sometime.
"So when an Alfa was advertised in Bristol, you can understand my astonishment to find out eventually, that it was John Harvey's motor,
now 550 miles away.
"When the penny finally dropped, I realised a note on the windscreen in Fort William would have saved both of us more than a thousand miles on
the clock and, in my case, about the same in pounds.
John said: "I had decided to change my Alfa and was looking for a Subaru Outback.
"The most suitable one available appeared to be in Bristol, so I eventually negotiated a deal there, with the Alfa as trade-in.
"A few days after delivering the car to Bristol, I had a call to say that they had had a couple of enquiries about the Alfa, both from my own
area.
"One was from Ballachulish and the other from Fort William.
"The prospective buyer from Fort William was keen to speak to me about the car.
"You can imagine our surprise when it transpired that seller and buyer were both in Fort William.
"When it turned out to be Jamie Ball, we both had a good laugh at the coincidence and the chain of events."
