Do Ipods work with broken screens?
I've recently got a new car that I was going to fit a CD changer to, but as an alternative I thought I might get an Ipod connection kit and use
an ipod. But I don't have an ipod..... yet.
My question is this, there seem to be a few on e-bay that have cracked screens, but as I will only use it to connect to my PC, load it with music,
then plug it in my car (hidden in a cubby hole) so I will not be bothered what the screen looks like. So, does the ipod lose any functionality with
this damage? Or is it best to leave them well alone? Are they likely to leak their guts out into my car? Or am I being a tight arse? I don't
really want to spend £40 on the connector, around £10 on broken ipod then realise I then need to spend another (guessing here) £80 on a working
i-pod.
Any thoughts?
thanks, Steve

yes it will work but it'll look rubish
what a tight arse
battery won't leak it's all sealed in a pouch at the back, screen has so little liquid in it you'd never see the stuff.
I'd be more worried that the hard drive got damaged from any shock loads, unless it was a nano which just uses memory
oh and to connect it to the car, use the plug in radio transiter for them, then you just tune into it on the car radio.
From what you say an Nano would be ideal, it will last for years and years plus the battery is easy to replace yourself, there is instructions on the
web on how to open them up (do it myself) then it's just a simple soldering job, you can buy the batterys from the web or r/c model shops.

you can get mp3 players for £14 now, nothing wrong with the I-pod once you get the hang of uploading songs which took me a few attempts.
My mum has mine now and she copes with it even though she can't even put a DVD on without help

Then he would need the screen, which is the whole question in the first place.

Depends on the crack, I mean if the screen is just black it would be imposable to use but a crack in the corner is not an issue.

So, when uploading music to a 'normal' ipod (ie not a nano), do you actually need the screen?
The car kit I was planning on getting can control an ipod with my stereo and stalk controls, so for that i would not need the screen.

you don't need the screen at all to upload, all done on the computer.
I'm a bit surprised that you say it can control the I-pod purely with the stalks as there are many menus and screens to get lost on, I'd
first check that you don't have to be on the songplay list before you can use the remote controls, which off course would need a screen. On my
nano I could not navigate around the menus without seeing the screen and the slightest wrong click can send me off changing the backlight setting
before I know it.
Worth checking I think.
edited to remove the shear number of times I had the word 'first' it my crazy brain...

well, this is the adaptor.....
http://www.lowcostcaraudio.co.uk/shop/VDO-Dayton-IP-2205-IP2205-iPod-Adaptor_searchTextJJVDOZZsearchMethodJJproductManufacturerZZproductJJ2687
says it controls the ipod.
I was just looking for a cheap option.
I do like the sound of getting a broken 4th gen and slipping a cf card in. i'll keep a lok out for some broken ones and maybe have a play

sounds like it displays it own simplifed menu system, so should work with out a screen. They'd have been better just using a USB memory stick to
hold the files...
Cheapy broken i-pod it is then might not even need a good battery as I bet it powers the thing aswell.

I can say from experience nano's aren't very hard to repair at all, if you find you want the screen working, the 2nd gen nano's are
great. Replacing the screen is a lot easier than replacing the battery, no soldering involved!

Nano maybe, but the bigger HD versions' replacements last about a year before they totally crap out. I never got more than a year out of the
original HD either. Battery life was crap too. No probs with a Nano, which of course, I got free. 2 gb only but I like to change the tunes regularly
anyhow. The big ones get too hard to find things.
Make Playlists! This speeds things up immensely.
The moral of my tale is that the Apple products are not made to last. Get a Nano and some custom made earbuds and you will be impressed with the sound
and battery life.
