Daft bugger Me

I spent most of this afternoon replacing the centre section of the exhaust on my tintop. I ended up removing the downpipe and cat as well in order to get at the siezed bolts joining it to the centre section away from underneath the car and in comfort.

Whilst removing the down pipe I managed to snap the rather fragile Lambda sensor in half so I removed what was left of it and went to the motor factors to get a new one.

On my return, I managed to fit the whole exhaust back into place. I was fairly happy with my work, despite my hands being rubbed raw, but I was a bit worried about the join from the manifold to the down pipe so I turned the engine over and sure enough there was loud blowing from the engine compartment and it sounded like I was running a NASCAR or something.

Fair enough I thought. Give it another try. Anyway, I removed the down pipe and added enough exhaust paste to the join to stick two elephants together. I tightened everything up twice as tight as last time certain that everything was hunky dory. I started the engine again and was met with the same deafening, throaty roar for a second time. Bugger!! I thought, a bit puzzled. I'm going to have to take it apart again for a third time....

At this point it slowly dawned on me that I hadn't fitted the new Lambda sensor so there was still a 16 millimetre threaded hole in the downpipe that was making all the noise!!!

I hope not to make that mistake again in future.

Theres a lot of it about doncha know.......I started my engine after re-fitting , and filling with new oil.........wondered what the odd slurping noise was , and why it was struggling to get any oil pressure............
Had a quick look........at the rapidly growing puddle of clean oil on the garage floor - and realised I hadnt re-connected the oil pressure guage

Oops, bit late for that now. Will have to see what Mr MOT man and his gas tester says in June.

The car's done nearly 100k on the original CAT so its probably due for a new one anyway. I can get one for about £50 so its not the end of the world.

At least the thread title is doubly accurate.....
