BBC4 now - In search of speed

Documentary recalling the successive attempts by Craig Breedlove and Art Arfons to break the land speed record. During six dramatic years in the early 60s, the 400, 500 and 600 miles per hour barriers were all broken.

I liked the last bit about Art Arfon's crash in the Green Monster - they'd originally designed the car to do 400mph, but they ended up doing 600mph. They showed the component that caused the crash - a seized wheel bearing that had welded the rollers to the races: quote "we should have set up an oil lubricator, instead of packing it with grease"

Amazingly he got away with a salt-blasted face, and no broken bones whatsoever. Carried away on a stretcher, but he recovered very quickly.

If you like this have you ever seen "World's fastest Indian", a true story set in about the same era IIRC, about a guy who modified an Indian Scout motorbike and set the land speed record for bikes under 1000cc. Great story.
