Boat building - from plans

Chaps,

Last night I was wondering why everything in the maritme world is so expensive (complete outfits in the States seem to cost what you'd pay for an engine here) - see these (I know this is a case of extremes):

Then I spotted this:

and started looking at engine marinisation.

Anyway, seeing how I like to build things and haven't plucked up courage to build something for the third dimension, and having spotted this:

from http://www.bateau.com, Iwas just wondering if anyone out there has done somehing similar, and how it went.

I sporadically follow This site which is a large steel boat built by 2 women from plans.

Thay've done a cracking job, and they're getting close to setting off around the world in it...

I have built five boats, ranging from a thirteen foot runabout, to a 32 foot, 9.5 ton motor sailer. The only large all wood boat was a 28 foot motor cruiser, and that took five years to complete. The best bet is to buy a GRP hull and superstructure and fit it out, that way the bulk of the hard work is done, but your still only about fifty percent of the way through the build. Cheers Ray

The tree surgeon we had round last year took away my turbo diesel xantia as he reckoned it would make an excellent powersource for his "latest home made boat"

A chap that used to work with me now owns a company that manufacture ribs - £60k for a bloody dingy mounted on a bit of fibreglass - madness!
