Yep that is the case, used to have SKY at the betting shop i worked at, strictly for sports of course but then SKY wanted more money and ladbrokes pulled out leaving us with just freeview. We only found this out when one day we only had the freeview channels rather than the full Sky set

Don't think you will, it used to be FTA but i'm sure it went over to the darkside a while ago.

Men and Motors is still FTA though.

Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a
car that you are still paying for - in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes
and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.

Hang on, hang on, hang on....

Freeview isn't the same as Freesat (sky) and it isn't the same as Freesat (BBC, ITV + C4).

If you stop subscribing to Sky the carb will still usually give you the Freesat (sky ) channels. Otherwise you can just buy a Freesat(sky) card for about 40 quid IIRC. Obviously you'll need a sky box and a satellite dish.

Freeview is the STB thingy with top-up cards available and uses roof aeriels.

Freesat(BBC,ITV+C4) is something completely different and uses a satellite dish and a decoder box (in fact it's very like Freesat[sky] but you get different channels and you get HD if your decoder box can handle it).....

Freeview is received via your standard television aerial and nothing to do with Satellite. This is the replacement for the old analogue signal we've been using since time began.

Freesat (Sky) and Freesat (BBC et al) come from the same satellite cluster.

This Freesat (Sky) includes encrypted and unencrypted FTA channels and the Sky Programme Guide

This Freesat (BBC etc al) only includes the unencrypted FTA channels and the new Freesat Programme Guide.

IIRC, all the channels in the latter offering are on the Astra 1D satellite which has a tighter footprint (focussed on the UK). This enables the BBC to transmit over satellite without paying Sky loads of money for encryption to avoid breaking the footprint imposed by the fact they're funded by a tax.

They're £20 and easy to get directly from Sky. You still need to pair this card with the box but this is free and only takes an hour or two to activate. Its correct name is Freesat.

BBC/ITV now offer "freesat" - note lowercase! This is nothing to do with Sky's service and can also offer HD. This requires a dish and a box (Sky box is NOT compatible but dish is)

To have Sky on HD you have to currently pay a subscription.

Finally Freeview - a set top box or built in to a newer TV that receives channels via an aerial.

I'm not Freeviewed up until 2012 so I have Freesat here (x 2) and normal Sky + too. I bought one card for one box and let my other card expire - both now paired to the current boxes and both Freesat boxes receive the same channels.

No Dave on either Freesat or freesat though, probably one of my most watched channels!
