Cycling in South France?
Anyone been to the very south of France? I'm off on holiday there on Monday, just north of Antibes / Nice.
Planning on a trip up to the Verdon Gorge etc at some point.
Basically, what I want to know is, is it worth me taking the mountain bikes (for me, SWIMBO and Ben) or should we just hire some when we get there?
Last year we had a great holiday in Devon, cycling along disused railway lines. However this year I'm a bit concerned that the hills will be
more like a mountain stage on the Tour d'France.
If the cycling is good, we'd probably ride every other day, if it's too hilly we'll just have dragged the bikes down for no
reason?
Cheers
Mike

I've been to the area loads of times and always regret not taking my bike!! Personally, I'd take a road bike though (or stick some skinny
tyres on the MTBs) There's some classic Tour de France stages down there. The coast road from Nice to St Tropez (done in stages!) is classic
with views to die for. Also as mentioned the Gorge du Verdon is worth a visit (but don't ride there, it's miles from anywhere!)
There's a track round the reservoir there which is good and flat.
In short, take the bikes if you've got space.

I, and a bunch of 8 mates visited the Verdun Gorge as part of our London to Monte Carlo Alpine tour.
There are some fairly steep sections at the start and end of the gorge but as the roads follow the gorge rather than continually crossing it it
shouldnt be too bad. It'll certainly be a lot harder than disused railway tracks though and at this time of the year it can be very hot.
If I was you (unless you are very keen cyclists) I would hire bikes down there. Or even better kayaks rather than bikes and do some of the river
between Castellane to Lac st Croix.
Linky to some pics of our tour HERE (Verdun Gorge from pic 110 to 149).
