Sunroof Sealing Audi Help
Wasn't sure where to put this so decided here as most peeps look here.
I have an Audi 80 1989 model, just got through MOT only needing front disks, score! tho they took some pounding to persuade the old disks off! So i
know how the guy who posted that thread on mondeo front disks is feeling.
Anyway back to the point of the thread. I feel that i should sort out some niggling faults with the car, namely replacing the headlining as the back
foot of it is no longer there.
I have got hold of a replacement, but its from a model without a sunroof. Which is not as simple as i thought to adapt. It looks like audi cut a big
hole in the non sunroof lining to go around the sunroof and its box that it slides into. And then covered that in a fabric of some kind. This box
takes up headroom and also will make it very difficult to replace the headlining. Don't mind putting the cardboard like stuff in but not
fabric.
So I am planning to remove the sunroof mechanism and seal the sunroof and simply put the headlining i have in. This will make give more headroom and
be much easier. We don't use the sunroof anyway.
However my dad doesn't think its a good idea, getting the sunroof to seal properly and not come out over bumps etc were his concerns.
Do it sound like a good idea? What would be a good method to seal the sunroof in, I deffo do not want it to leak.
Any help or opinions will be appreciated
Many thanks

I assume its a steel sunroof and you are just thinking of leaving the external panel in place but nothing under it. With headlioner out and sunroof
dismantled id assume you will have access to the area under the roof. I would have thought you could bond in some strips that the panel will sit onto
and then apply copius amounts of sikaflex or bond and seal underneath. Externaly it should just then look like a closed sunroof. Inside look like its
never had a sunroof. Sounds like a plan to me and i dare bet no-one will ever notice if done cleanly.

Weld a plate over the hole and paint it
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Not sure if i have the skill to do that! the roof would end up warped! plus its difficult to match audi paint, they used to cure the whole car in an
oven! and the car is in pretty good condition interior wise apart from this headlining! the one on my 1976 saab is in a much better state!
I will use silikaflex, is that a brand name or a type of adhesive? Also Darrren W what do you mean by a steel sunroof? The whole panel is made of
steel or just the surround? as the sunroof is made of glass with i imagine a steel surround.
Just reread that first paragraph and man theres alot of exclamation marks isn't there?

Hi All
Thought I would add an update in here:
I was going to stick the sunroof in place the weekend before last but me and my dad decided against it for various reasons.
I did the simpler thing of getting a panel cut and powder coated to stick to the roof over the sunroof hole with the silkaflex which an awesome
adhesive!
Anyway the downside of this is that the edges of the powdercoated panel, (it actually matches the original paint pretty well!) look a bit unsightly so
am looking for a type of trim that can be stuck around to make it look abit better. Think of a piece of metal glued to a roof and your about there.
Will post some pictures tomorrow when i get them!
Any leads into suitable trim would be appreciated!
