IMO there is no point having an alarm unless it's monitored. Either by someoone you pay to do it or by a caring neighbour.

Matt

I used to install systems ( a few years ago!) and I was never keen on wireless systems as these just introduce more things to go wrong and make them less reliable, which ends up in not using them.

Wired systems are harder to install (cable runs) but are a better solution in the long term.

Non Locost question : House alarms

I currently work in the industry, Alarm response, The wireless types cause too many false alarms. Depending on the property three or four motion detectors covering the main floor will do the trick. window and door alarms don't give much advantage, because seconds after the culprit (s) are inside the motions will pick them up. It does need to be monitored, You don't want your neighbours up in arms after you have been away for the weekend and the noise maker has sounded every ten minutes or so and no one can turn it off. Plus you need to appoint a key holder to let the police in if a real alarm or to re-arm the system if a false alarm.

After i was burgled i went out and in a rush bought a wireless alarm.

Its given a total of 2 false alarms in over 18 months. Both when its really warm and i'm convinced these are cause the sensor in the alarm box that detects if its being tampered with isn't 100% on the wall (i put it up in a rush).

Its given me peace of mind, allowed me to sleep the days after being done and has so far (along with security lights) been successful in deterring any more burglary's(*).

(*) thats actually a lie, a week later someone turned up and instead of trying my house, removed the screws from my shed door, rummaged around and left taking nothing. I guess the house security lights scared them away.

I am a senior engineer for a large national company, firstly anything is better than nothing however as mentioned wireless systems can give lots of trouble, admittedly there are a few that dont however the cost of these are well into four figures. Try you local approved company or look for the large nationals having a special offer.

The cost of a professionally installed system may not be as expensive as you think. However look for the service charges, a maintained system by an approved company will normally lead to a discount in your contents insurance.
