Tin Top Zetec trouble

Hi guys,

the wire has a 1997 P reg 1.8 zetec escort (silvertop). Quite quick when it's behaving itself.

Trouble is that every time you lift off the accelerator it shudders and nearly stalls. When it's cold it often does stall. It drives fine otherwise, pulls strongly through all gears. It's just that point of lifting off and depressing the clutch that it just seems to misfire a bit and amost stall. The idle is fine once it recovers (only takes a couple of seconds).

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Sam.

Idle control valve is pretty common to fail on those. I had to do one on my 1.6.

Also the throttle position sensor isn't uncommon.

Id go for idle control valve aswell. My mates escort GTI did the same thing. Sometimes u can clean them up with carb cleaner.

If that dont work throttle position sensor.

So i am thinking it may not be the idle conrol valve as when mine was faulty the engine hunted all the time at idle.

Not saying dont check the icv but its hard to diagnose without being there.

when was last service ?

check the air box to throttle pot connections for possible leak,we had a problem like this on our R plate 1600 escort and it turned out to be a badly refited air box after its service.

Thanks guys, I will have a look at the idle control valve.

And yes indeed I am married to a wife, not a wire - it was kinda late last night.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Clean the throttle and butterfly first with carb cleaner and a rag (without the engine running). It'll be a bit reluctant to start after but will go. If that doesn't cure it move on to the ICV.
