Warhammer ?
My son has decided his next venture will be warhammer and after a visit to a games workshop today i can see this is going to cost me (or his
grandparents)
£8 for a tin of aerosol black matt base paint i'm sure i can get this cheaper once i've worked out exactly what it is.
Has anyone any experiance of this model making/gaming fad thats going to make me even more skint

I used to dabble in it when I was about 11/12. I used to paint the miniatures, never played the game. I remember it being very expensive!

Not sure how to put this but I'm a bit "suspicious" of the older players when I go past the Games Workshop.

Yep my son is 12.5 and he is pretty keen on the model making side, got to admit it does seem expensive but i'm impressed with the figures he has
made and painted so far so if he sticks at it i dont mind.
I have a vision of me a drill and some more shelves going up
Just want to see if any others have dealings with this modeling and are their any alternative (cheaper) paints.

I was into it when I was a 'yoof' - I still get a bit of a pang when I walk passed Games Workshop in town.
It seems expensive, and you can get all sorts of stuff (you can buy full army sets now, bufr a lot of money).
What I would say is don't go buying big sets of stuff - just a half decent paint set and a fairly simple model to start with. I found that when
I had loads of models on the go at the same time, I never actually got round to finishing anything very often.

Ron champion has a new book coming out soon. "Build your own warhammer model for £250"
I used to do it when I was 11/12. Not cheap.

Does he want to paint / make models or does he want to role play??
I'm asking as i never saw the fascination with painting models where as being in charge of an army and trying to kick the **** out of your
opposition did appeal (look, its just a bigger version of chess).
The cheat way i remember was to buy a skeleton army - very easy to paint, spray while then brush with watered down black

I think it's one of those fads that kids go through real quick - surely this sort of stuff comes up 2nd hand in Loot or on the Bay all the time?

errrm, i've got mates who are 40 and role play. Ok they don't push bits of metal around, but gather on a sunday evening, banish women, eat
curry, belch, fart, laugh, discuss life and occasionally throw some dice. The current game has been going on for something like 12 years - although if
they did less of the curry etc it might have ended.

haha, you're right about the skeleton armies. Back 'in the day' you could get a box for about £15 that had most of an army in it. I
played warhammer and 40k, with a spot of manowar thrown in (the ship game). Still got boxes of armies in the garage!
If i dare confess, i only stopped playing when i lost touch with the lad i played with , i would probably still play now if i had time!
Got most of the black library books too.
And a collection of all the rule books, back to 3rd ed (maybe 2nd too) warhammer box, siege, roleplay, the elric one.
Good god thats sad

Ha Ha - thats what you think...
I had a pang to play when a young lad, got told in no uncertain terms a big fat NO from my parents.
I was angry about it for about a week.
Got over it and after a couple of months was really pleased cos I had money to spend on a nice mountain bike that I would have blown on a hobby that I
would have been ashamed of just a few weeks later.
If it was me I;d put up some resistance, and see if he goes off the idea. At least test to see if he really wants to do it before splashing the
cash.

I'm happy for him to do this, its been brewing for some months now so i dont think its going to fade away.
I'm more pleased that this hobby will mean less playstation/Wii time of which i worry about more.
As for finding this stuff for sale 2nd hand, it seems near impossible to get a deal even on finished and painted armies and parts. Ebay as usual is
kicking up stupid high and in some cases more than new prices, also i didnt realise this stuff has been around for some 30 years so there is plenty
out there.

I used to play Warhammer 40K until I was 17 at school. Used to spend hours making and painting my own models, normally just a collection of characters
all chopped up to make the one I actually wanted. Never really got into the "normal" Warhammer, it wasn't sci-fi enough for me. Now,
the Dark Angles Ravenwing was though.
Although having just Goolged them, the models have come a long way since the ones I made.
Having said that, they still don't make a mounted banner bearer like what I made.

I did it for years, sodl all my old stuff last year (hadn't been used for years)
Gave the rest away at my local GW
Also used to do LARP
(to be fair though it's a good excuse to get poo faced for a long weekend and wallop geeks)
God, i'm such a nerd lol
Recently started playing GW's new MMORPG
You couldn't pwn your way out of a wet paper bag, with "PWN ME!!" written on it, from the "pwned take-away" which originally contained one
portion of chicken tikka pwnsala and the obligatory free pwnpadom.

LARP - the mates who meet on a sunday also used to do that (ok, I confess, i've started joining them on a Sunday evening). One still does (he
runs a lot of events now) and his misses is probably as much into it as him. Did it once when i was 17. Enjoyed it but didn't do it again which
probably saved me a fortune and lots of brain cells.
What is the deal with the models? If you make the model you can have that in your army or do you have to spend some form of points to buy the
'character' and then you make the model??? I played a little of 40k when it was first released (how old am i) but never got into the model
making idea.

original warhammer there was a formula for working out the points value of any made up character(istics).
Chaos Lords licked ass, and the original Vimto monks

Before each game you agree a points level/scenario with your opponent. So it could be a small scale skirmish, or a large base attack/defence. You then
get to spend these points on what ever you want, within the rules of the game. IE an army needs at least one base unit and a command unit other wise,
you can have want ever units your army has at its disposal. To play with these units you need to have the models to represent them. So you tend to end
up having many more units than you can use in one battle, so you can pick an choose to suit the battle. I used to collect the Dark Angles, more
specifically, their fast attack wing, the Ravenwing. So I ended up with many bikes and small fast moving scout units.
