would ther be a reason for no making engine mounts myself?
i want to make my own engine mounts for my aries locost for a 2.0 Zetec engine.
Can you help?
You are allowed tol make a chassis but according to the BOOK you are not supposed to make your own engine mounts.
just kidding - ofcourse you can.
I had to do this recently - I used 3 mm mild steel strips, 3 of, to weld into I shape.
The ends were bent over and another plate welded on. I have posted pictures somehwere - search for engine mounts by 02GF74.
Ive made my own, its not hard if you can weld.
I would use 5mm plate for the bits that bolt to the engine. There have been a few that have failed with 3mm.
obviously wou make the make sure that you get the engine lined up stright and your welding is up to the job!
One word - strength!
Co - incidentally, I'm at just that stage myself - engine now fits, just need to fabricate the mounts.
Now, I can weld (after a fashion) but not well - I'm just a beginner, so I'm going to leave this crucial bit of welding to a pro.
My plan is either:
1... get the steel myself, cut it to fit, tack weld it together, then take it to be welded properly.
or
2... measure and draw what I want, then as for 1, above.
To answer your question - how good is your welding?

I have never tried welding, but I was going to get a welder to learn. I know that it would be cheaper to by the mounts, but once I have learnt to weld I can do other things. The rubber mount, what type should I use?
I have allways made my own engine mounts - I didnt even use the ones that came with my Fury kit cuz the engine sat too high
I use 5mm plate for the engine end , the thick walled (at least 3mm) tube , with a short piece of the same tube with a thick washer welded on one end
at the rubber mount end .
Rover v8 mounts are very good , and can be got off ebay for a fiver a pair
As for welding them yourself - just one word............practice !

#mine are 3mm which is the same as the brackets bolted to the block (original)
Further to my last note, I have made my mounts today
- used 6mm for the flat plates,
3mm walled square tubing,
Land rover rubber blocks.

As I previously said, I am not good at welding, so they have just been tacked to hold them until a guy I know who can weld properly makes them
solid.
I am pretty pleased with them, even though I do say it myself.

I dont think so - maybe the bottle's run out ? - you are saying that because of the brown dust?

I did mine like DLL's, you could have put another piece of the 40mm box section on top instead of the gusset plate. Does the bottom of the box section hang off your engine plate ? better to have it all on there and put a spacer on top of or under your mount to make up the height loss.
