Honda c50 pah boat anchor of an engine, for compact hi output you need a Raleigh wisp/peugeot103/mobylette engine 2 stroke so no heavy valves etc and a built in cvt transmission, all up weight of around 10kg and 3.5 arm wrenching bhp

Can't help remembering my FS1E when I read this thread.... when I was 16 it was the most powerful engine on the planet, until I hung my L-plates on an RD250LC.

OK, any (modern) bike engine is pretty compact. Smallest viable units have got to be the 'stacked' gearbox generation, 1 litre variety. That'll be the R1's, anything post carburettor (5VY onwards) lovely small functional units with sensible power outputs. All recent ZX10 units, anything GSXR1000 from K9 onwards.

Aprilia RSV-4 Mille would be a contender in my book. Fairly modern so compact manufacture and stacked gearbox etc. but also a V4 rather than straight 4 which will reduce the width of the unit as well.

But as said above, almost any litre sports bike engine in the last decade will be as compact as they're likely to ever be.

R1 fits fairly well in the front of a classic Mini.
