where are the Sierra's ??
belgian2b - 16/9/11 at 06:45 PM

Hello,

two weeks now that i am looking for Sierra donor with 2.0 ohc EFI engine and no way

i have been looking on the net, phoning scrapyards, ford dealers etc and i always get the same answer : we do not have Sierra part anymore!

i found two in Germany, but they are 400 to 500 km from me !!

is the situation the same in UK ?

Where are all those Sierra gone ??????

Scrap prices peaked at £210 for a Sierra sized car over here, so all the old cars stuck in the corner of the scrapyards that had been there for years got hauled out and cubed. There is very old little stuff in the scrappies these days.

There are a few on ebay, mostly Cosworths (or what perport to be Cosworths!!!!) but its a long way for you to travel. Why not go for a different donor, one that is easier to source. I cannot advise on that as mine was a Mk1 Escort but I think the MX5 has been used amongst others.

mcerd1 - 16/9/11 at 07:17 PM

have a look for granada/scorpio's too (the 1985 - 94 models) I'm using one for my dax

90% of the mechanical bits are the same as the higher spec sierra's and its easy to allow for the differences in teh otehr bits

a few on ebay in the uk: link

Scrapage scheme and the price of scrap and banger racing just about finished them of in one go.

Ive had twelve. I used to pay around fifty quid, I havnt seen one in my locall scrapie for around 18 months or more.

motorcycle_mayhem - 16/9/11 at 07:36 PM

Extreme rarity for me to see a Sierra around here (SW, UK), the Cavalier has sadly gone too it seems.

I'm 'driving' a MK1 Mundaneo around, I see a few of those in circulation but sadly dwindling. Even the older Vectra has bitten the rust.

I blame the scrappage scheme, the road tax regime and the cost of fixing the things when bits (even consumables) expire. The 'must have new, must have now, must be better' brigade aren't helping. I am guilty of scrapping a perfectly good Volvo 940 simply because of fuel poverty, but then I see a lot more 2011 Range Rovers out there now, some folks have money to burn.

If it was me, I'd think of another donor source. Plenty of rusty MX5 (Miata for our colonials) things around, or outdated (cheap) BMW's!

...or there's the Suzuki, Yahama, Honda, Kawasaki alternative :-)

ashg - 16/9/11 at 07:50 PM

dont worry too much the amount of bmw's i see on the m25 every day there will be no shortage of donors in the future

That's not true. I've got three around here I see regularly. Taxed and on the road. One is a Janspeed Turbo, original.

Cheers,
Nev.

mrwibble - 17/9/11 at 10:11 AM

Theres a few still driving round here, they look seriously old skool these days.

Problem round here is banger racing, the shell off my donor was snapped up by one of the guys who reckoned he got through 3 a season, multiply that by X (number of competitors) and you see what happens....

lotusmadandy - 17/9/11 at 12:40 PM

There is a k-plate saphire at the industrial est near me.
The body is mint but every window is smashed, the guy that
owns it seems to be hanging on to it.

i was hhoping to get a sierra 1.3 to take advantage of the £130 road tax, there isn't even a category on that site so there are obviously none left

why would the sierra need to be a 1.3 ?

you could just fit any small engine like the 1.4 zetec SE (the all aloy one from the fiesta/focus) or even go to the dark side and fit a bike engine...

To be fair I'm suprised how many are left when you look through that list, there must be afew thousand still taxed in 2011,including afew xr4x4ghia's! it must be months since I've seen any bar the cossie's on the road!

vanepico - 20/9/11 at 02:58 PM

cause i want it all from the same donor car, and the price, i'd like to know where you could get a 1.3 bike for a couple hundred quid

they hardly made any 1.3 sierra's in the first place so your looking for a rare beast, almost as rare as the 2.3D...
(I think they made 1.3 pinto versions in germany, but again in limited numbers)

so your probably best looking for a pinto or CVH engined sierra (1.6 / 1.8 / 2.0) that way you'll get a type 9 box - to which you can easily fit a 1.3 or even 1.1 x-flow engine which shouldn't cost much (I think thats what a uk 1.3 sierra had anyway)

vanepico - 20/9/11 at 05:24 PM

is there any way i can do that and avoid the dreaded q plate? And what would the tax be if i got a ~1.8 litre then put a 1.3 in? Would it still be tax for the >1549 cc group? If ypu change the engine post registration is it classed as having the old engine for ever?

belgian2b - 29/10/11 at 08:36 AM

Yessss !!!!

i finally found a scorpio.

Car looks good in the ad.
only 200 km from home.

I will collect it tomorrow.

Stripping will start soon if the weather stays dry.
