What holds the wheel on?!
Howlor - 28/8/10 at 03:22 PM

Replaced the wheel bearing on my brothers Polo this week and after a sherbet last night started to wonder what holds the wheel on!

The wheel bearing pressed in from the front of the hub and the bearing is actually the drive flange fully integrated. Apart from the friction of the bearing in the hub what else hold the wheel on?

Thanks,
Steve

Driveshaft cv joint with nut on the end i would think.

On a lot of the peugeots (106,205,306,309,405,406) all that holds a rear swing arm on is A (yes a as in one) 8mm diameter bolt that screws through the swing arm and into the torsion rod. Without this bolt you could just pull the swing arm OFF it bearing and mounting tube.

Ah! But they rust in place within the first 100 yards. Gotta love french engineering.

Nope, I never had a job getting either the bolt undone OR the arm off.

If it's anything like the Skoda Fabia wheel bearings, there's a toothed ring around the outboard of the bearing housing that snaps into a groove in the hub. To remove the bearing the teeth need breaking off.

All that hold the halfshafts and thus the wheels onto a mk1/2 escort or any kitcar with the same axle is a pressed on steel ring!
