Can you email me one of the files, please?
A Google search doesn't immediately return anything informative but I might be able to tell you more about the file format if you send me one.

Are you sure its as1?
*.asf is a common format. (active streaming format)

Never heard of .as1
I have most audio and video codecs on my machine.

It's SA1, but that doesn't seem to help.

I thought I might be able to show how clever I am here, but apparently that's not a very impressive demonstration.

The utility I just ran on it reckons it's an MP3 (see below) but unfortunately if I change the extension & play it with Quicktime Player it just sounds completely alien. This makes me think that Panasonic have done "something clever" (read as "proprietary" with the MP3 format so that only their own software can read it.

I think that unless Panasonic offer any tools to convert this you might be SoL. On the other hand, if you can play the audio with the camera, maybe you run a cable to the input of your PC & do an audio-grab that way?

$ file /Users/stroller/Desktop/AOB001.SA1

Sorry not to be more help,

Stroller.

Nope. If your son's a music specialist then he's likely to do much better than I can. I thought I might get some easy cred but over-estimated myself.

Its a long shot but perhaps if you just change the file type to mp3 by right clicking on it, sounds stupid, but works surprisingly often.

if you can play it with winamp, then you can convert it to .wav or/and then to mp3...

use the diskwriter plugin, standard, and play it and it will write a corresponding .wav file... this can then be converted to mp3
