cam bhp gains

im thinking of building a new head for the pinto using either the kent fr33 or the gts3 (it has a wide powerband good for sprinting) only thing is i cant find out the bhp gains for them over a standard cam.im sure someone will know where to find out on here

A cam on it's own will give you only potential gains which will be realised only if you get the engine breathing better, otherwise the cam can't do its job

Amongst a lot of other mods on my pinto I used a FR33 and got somewhere near 200bhp if that helps any.

Cheers

ok lets say i have a standard cam in the head i already have ( polished ,ported ,bike carbs ,big valve ect ect) and i change the cam for a fr33 or gts3 how much more bhp will i have?

Dunno about Kent but Piper suggest, or used to, about 15 for the 270 and 22 for a 285.

If you are running a standard cam and you have done all the above then really there is no way to know until you fit the new cam and measure the results on a rolling road. there can be a huge variation in power gains from head porting for instance, depending on how well it is done.

I was aiming to get mine to about 145bhp but I happened on a really good engineer who just said he only knew one way to do a pinto head. His price was very reasonable for all the relevant machining etc so I gave it a go and I was very pleasantly suprised.

There is no really reliable way to say that cam is worth so many bhp, the head is so much more etc as all the mods interact with each other.

My Spec was

Balanced crank, rods and pistons
lightened/balanced flywheel
Block rebored with tensioning plate
decked block
ported and skimmed head
reworked valves
FR33 cam - with vernier pulley
twin 45's

I started with a 205 block and Injection Head so didn't increase the valve size

U2U me if you want to know more.

cheers

My engine made 120bhp at back wheels after diy porting the head, FR32 cam, bike carbs and decent exhaust.
Lets est 120bhp at wheels is 140 at engine. 15 was probs fuelling and exhaust so id estimate 15 is due to cam (if Fords std claims are to be believed - ie 110bhp)

Boggs did suggest in an ever so polite way that the FR32 cam isnt so good. They suggested the Piper A8 (as did Dave Walker).

Its probs hard to say what a cam change alone will make as there are so many other factors to consider and we hardly ever go for a standard install in our cars.

The engine builder that did Mookys engine gets his own cam profile in that seems to work a treat (AndyD has one). Might be worth seeing if he can supply that cam.

cheers all.the prob i have is that i didnt do any of the work on the head myself it was donated to me complete with cam in so i dont know the quality of workmanship ,even though its giving out over 150bhp id still prefer to start fresh with new parts
