IB5 gearbox for mid engine
iank - 19/12/08 at 08:07 PM

Poking around to find a better match of engine+transmission for the buggy.

According to Wikipedia (wikipedia link) the IB5 on the Ford Focus was made cable change and hydraulic clutch from 1998 which would make it a bit of a contender (most of the ones I've been looking at are either rod change or cable clutch or both).

Can anyone confirm this is true? Also are any of the other small fords fitted with the IB5 using this configuration?

yep the IB5 is cable change and hydraulic clutch. commonly found on 1.4/1.6/1.8 focus's. i think the 2002 onwards fiesta had this gearbox on a few of the petrol models, not 100% sure though.

great gearbox, very light and works well with the cables pointing forwards in a midi configuration. if you use a 1999 mondeo gear lever facing backwards all the gears are in normal place aswell!

mk2 mondeos (1996 on)are cable gears and hydraulic clutch.
i cant tell an IB5 from MTX75 though.
you say small ford, both mondeo AND focus
are wider than for example a sierra.

Hi

What was the ST170 6 speed box like for ratios. Had a quick scout around but nothing showing up.
There have been a few of these boxes floating around from where people have brought the complete units and used the engine up to a type 9 etc. There was even one going FOC on the WSCC site a month ago.

Cheers Matt

The IB5 is also in the Fiesta with the Zetec SE engine, but was rod change (with hydraulic clutch). The Riot uses this box and the gearchange is great. I've used it - the change feels good (but not run yet!!!!!)

mk6 fiesta with i-b5 is cable change, hydro clutch, what kind of gearing do you want? the highest final drive you will find is 4.25 which is from the zetec s fiesta, the best setup i have found is a puma gearset, with the zetec s final drive
