what was wrong then??

Probably nothing wrong - x-flows can be very stubborn when trying to get oil pressure for the first time.

Oil pumps aren't very good at pumping air. Therefore when new they need to be primed or they can't suck up enough oil to get going. Oil is good for priming but getting it in there is a bit tricky! Filling with vaseline is a well known trick and works well....

another good trick is to use a piece of clear pipe pushed into the oil pressure sender thread hole and suck oil through before you try turning over the engine.

Cracking result, Chris..some types of pump need that little help after running totally dry (like 10 years of storage)..

Oh - I forgot to say - well done!

It is nice to see the pressure gauge rising and the oil light going out...
