Guys, i've had a guy from work ask me what other ford engine he can place into his locost, at the minute he has a pinto (2.1) in the car, that
has developed a problem (large hole in the block)
. He just wants a quick fix to get him up and going til he gets funds to build another engine,
but he has asked me what other ford engines will match a type 9 box? As he wants to change away from the pinto engine, he's after some thing
more modern. From a quick look i think a zetec may fit (i'm prob wrong) also he taked asked about a duratec motor. Can you help with any
advice.

zetec will bolt staright on.
I don't believe a duratec will, not without an adapter.
..... now sits back and waits for someone to confirm.....
Zetec will bolt straight on no problem.. Duratec doesn't, needs an expensive new bellhousing.
Only problem with repalcing the pinto with a zetec is the exhaust is on the opposite side. You'll also need different ignition system over the
dizzy on the pinto.

Dont think there is a quick and easy alternative really - probably the cheapest would be to find another Pinto block and rebuild to existing spec (to
save loads of time and money sorting fueling etc) or fit a standard Pinto and sort the carbs to suit.
If he's talking Duratec then i'd say best option would be to go straight for it properly but forget any tuning options. He'll need to
sort the sump, induction, bellhousing, flywheel, ECU etc etc etc but at least the job is done properly.
Zetec is a little cheaper (not sure by how much these days though) but i'd still go for the extra potential and lighter Duratec.
Another option might the the VAG 1.8T engine for which i have seen bellhouses advertised (Tiger Holland etc). Yet another is the Toyota 4-age - again
with a bellhousing (RAW etc)

dont forget if he changes engines the exhaust may be on the wrong side

Cheers guys, don't think he cares to much about moving the exhaust, he just wanted some thing newer. So he's going for a zetec, i think he'll look for an st170 engine.
