Intake gasket?
tegwin - 16/3/09 at 03:13 PM

I had to take my SU carbs off the manifold over the weekend to clean them... They were mounted using quite a thick fibre type gasket...The gasket is trashed so I cant reuse it...

I am struggling to find the correct gasket to just fit straight on as the carbs are a weird size.... and nowhere seems to sell fibre type gasket material..

So... would I get away with just using the normal 1mm thick paper type gasket material with a bit of liquid gasket paste for added measure?

I need to get it resolved tonight idealy as I have to get it tuned up for the MOT re-test...

Is there anything else I could use as a suitable gasket?

I expect it's that thick for a good reason.. either as a thermal isolator to stop the carbs getting to warm, or to stop vibration..

Not much help I'm afraid!

Be sure to use the right instant gasket too as some aren't resistant to fuel.

I think the universal blue is ok for petrol though.

If the carb mounting flange and the manifold faces are flat then you shouldn't need any gasket goo, the gaskets will seal OK on there own . The thick "gasket" will be a thermal insulator ,

The insulator isn't a gasket.

Normal way was have a separate additional gasket either side of the insulator.

No jointing compound was usually used on the outer gasket so if the carb is removed the insulator remains intact.
