I'm fitting a radiator and fan from a Nissan Micra. I was going to use a fiesta thermostat housing for the fan switch, but the wopping great plug on top won't fit under my nosecone.

Can anybody suggest an alternative method for controlling the operation of the fan?

Appreciate any help.

This is my first "new topic", so a little bit of history being made here today!

There are several different sensors that can be fitted inline in the radiator hose. Burton Power do several different ones.

Some of them are adjustable so you can change the temprature that the fan kicks in. They are about £30 - 50. Have seen them somewhere else, but i cant remember where now

I was starting to worry I would have to drop my engine!!!!

If these switches are in line in the radiator hose, does anyone have any thoughts on the effectiveness of drilling & threading a bit of pipe and fitting it inline with the fiesta switch screwed into it?

Shouldnt be a problem if you can sort the right thread mate.

P.s Demon Thieves do the adjustable inline fan switch. I have got one on my car as it happens.......

I gave up trying to find a way to mount a stat reliably and just wired the fan to be on all the time.

If the micra rad is a bit marginal, and your engine is big, and the bonnet is cramped, it might not be a bad thing. So for me, running a cologne V6, on all the time inst such a bad approach.

FWIW, the polo radiators have the thermostat built into the radiator. Makes it all very simple really...

assuming it works that is...

The micra one has one built in - it is on the opposit side to the filler (?) cap. Supply power to the stat. it switches at 96deg. fan comes on. Our temperature stat is in the engine block of the fireblade engine, not in the radiator.

ive got a peice of stainless tube in the middle of my top hose with a metro thermoswitch araldited in the hole i cut,been like that for over 2 years now without prob

There are some thermostats where they use a wire which fits in the top rad hose-just take the hose off-feed wire in then use some sealant and clamp it back down.

my bit of stainless came from a wardrobe,right size for ford top hose as well

Scrap yard? Plenty of combinations of bends and lengths on cars there just have to make sure the hose is ok and the different lengths wont matter if you are using stainless or copper to join them up.

Heh, just been to scrappy. We have all the hoses we need for a test run, I was really just wondering about a good place to get new stuff for the proper installation, mainly the metal unions and big jubs.

Hellfire's right- there's one built into the Micra rad.

When you say the whopping great plug, what does it look like? there are two types of fan stat that goes in to the fiesta a small brass on with spade connectors on top or a brass one with a largish plastic thing on top, if you have the bigger one then get a small one from a local auto suppliers.

Does this make sense?

Its the fan switch... nearly forgot the difference! Of course the thermostat cant really be in the radiator unless the water constantly goes thru it.

The polo came with 32mm pipes on it, though 34mm sierra ones still need a wiggle to get them on. Im using a selection of pipes, with 32mm copper tubes to join them top and bottom. Gonna put blobs of weld to make the 34mm end fit better!

I thought of summat like that.

didnt fancy the long walk should it pop out at boiling point ant 15 psi tho....

Mild steel is fine - jag used it on the v12 - takes over 15 years to rust thro.

got to a scrappy and get lotsa odd bits of hose....they wont charge you much. if you see one you really want to buy new, at least you know the model it came from - if you write it on the hose. However, when you find out that things like sierra bottom hoses cost 20 quid, you might want to use second hand ones....

Well loads of options then!

I'll have to get my radiator down and see if I can find a fan switch.

MarkP for info I have the big plastic plug so failing above I'll have a look round for a smaller version.

Just change the big plastic type for the smaller one, simple really. they both fit.
simple to do and cost about £2

Once had problems with coolant temperature getting very high when towing a caravan uphill in hot weather using a turbo diesel with the intercooler in front of the rad, tried a bottle of Water Wetter from Demon thieves, dropped the coolant temperature by approx 20 degrees. may be worth a try if your cooling system is a bit marginal. cheaper than a head gasket Rusty

Got my radiator down, and there it is, staring me in the face.

Wires going from my fan to the radiator, connected to a fan switch/stat.

Thinking back, I wondered what that wire was when I bought it!

Got there in the end, but I think it's worth repeating:

THE NISSAN MICRA RADIATOR IS DEFINITELY FITTED WITH A FAN STAT

I may have this engraved on my forehead.
