Hi All,
I was going to use a type 9 box and had set up my flywheel for an 8 inch 2 litre clutch. For various reasons including wieght, size etc I am
seriously considering going back to the original 4 speed.
Can I fit the Belhousing over the 8 inch pressure plate? One guy I spoke to said a bit of grinding should fix it
Cheers Blair
you should be able to swap the bell housing over from the 5 speed T9 box to the 4 speed type N box with no problems.
i await to be corrected tho
depends if the 4sp has integral or seperate bellhousing doesnt it?
Also, i think a 5sp with an ally bellhousing doesnt weight that much more than a 4sp.
Suppose it would be useful to know what type of 4 speed box you have?
Mark
The box is a 4 speed out of a MK2 escort with integral bell housing. The Type 9 is heavy but the extra lenght of the extention housing is causing the
most problems. If I want to race in classic classes in New Zealand I will have to stay with 4 speed to be a replica as well.
Probably best if pull the motor and try
Cheers Blair
If you intend racing I would think the 4 speed would be better, as depending on the type of racing the 5th cog is more or less redundant.
I thought about using a type 9, but decided on my four speed.
Back to your original point, theres plenty of metal that can be removed from the four speed box if thats what's needed to make your clutch fit.
However, I wouldnt think removing any more than was necessary is a good idea
best of luck

Thanks Mark,
Pulled the Type 9 off and started to try and fit the 4 speed. Quiet a lot of metal to remove by the looks of it. Applied copper grease to the cover
and fitted the box to get the contact points. Very quickly looked like a coal miner when attacked with the angle grinder. Looks like it will take a
while but is going to be cheaper than starting again.
best of luck, and continue knowing that if you fudge it up, type 3 boxes are ten to a penny.
