Coolant for Golf engine

Not sure if this is an Anything Else or at all relevent to Locosting:

I've got a MKII Golf.

When buying some anti-freeze recently the guy at GSF told me to make sure I bought the same stuff as had been used before. He didn't tell me why tho.

Is it important to do this? I can't really see why unless maybe if I was just topping it up. As it happens I want to drain the whole system.

Cheers,

James

Ethlyn glycol anti freeze is the type you should use . DO NOT use the newer synthetic anti freeze which I'm told reacts with ethlyn glycol and turns to a gel blocking the cooling system causing overheating problems. Rusty

Golf Mk3 from 96 used G12 (VAG speak) antifreeze, it pink. Rusty's right, don't mix it. Yours should use ordinary old fashioned blue
