Trumpet advice.
Worzey - 2/6/09 at 08:59 PM

Following on from my rolling road results yesterday I wanted to gauge opinion on the throttle body trumpets I'm using.

At present these are totally open so I run the risk of sucking debrise into the engine.

What can I do/use to prevent damage without restricting airflow?

use a decent quality air filter

I'd suggest a nice big plenum at least 1.5* engine capacity with a K+N cone type filter strapped onto the end of suitable size.... With a bit of luck you'll even increase BHP....

ITG Megaflow with suitable (custom) backplate.

The little wire baskets that fit at the bottom of the trumpet, keeps your engine looking cool and keeps out the large bits of crud, although small bits will still pass through it - they are basically seives for the trumpet.

What about a pair of your wife's-Gfriend's tights?

Don't use any of the gauze thingy's - they don't stop much and they significantly reduce the effective size of the trumpets.

Go socks, sausage, flat panel or cone filter - the bigger the better [less resistance]!

I'm running socks through the bonnet on my Silvertop at the moment, but am changing to a flat panel filter under a scoop to try to quieten it down a bit. Silvertops are great engines BTW!!!

I've just noticed your engine mounts. They look like ones supplied by RAW? If so you may want to consider adding extra stiffening as I managed to bend both engine mounts on my engine. For example in the picture above I just welded in a triangle on the right to to match the left side.

As for your question I would say a large plenum with a cone filter would be the first choice. This also reduces the induction noise for trackdays. Then a large panel or dome filter would be next. Socks will definitely reduce the effect of the trumpets. The air flow in to the trumpets starts from behind the curved lip of the opening so anything near there wil have an effect.

I'm sure you've seen mine before but here's a pick of the one I bought from Malaysia via Ebay. There are cast trumpets inside the plenum. Not quite up to the quality of spun trumpets but good enough.

This is the sort of thing Justin bought on ebay - no idea how this compares but looks the job.

That link failed but if you put in 4age 20v and check out all the international sellers it'll be there.

Thanks for the replies.

The plenum does look good and I'm going to need one if I go down the Rotrex supercharged route in future.

I'm not sure the wife would be too keen on me using her tights (and I'm not using mine either).

She is also unlikely to be too keen on the £400 cost of the plenum once shipping and duty is factored in!

I might go for the socks as a short-term solution and then get the plenum as part of a winter project.

Actually that's the same seller if I remember correctly. His prices have gone up a bit but I made an offer and got 20-30% off the buy it now price. The plenum shipped in 4 working days which was a welcome suprise. He was based in Malaysia when I bought mine originally.
