Having farted around trying to decide what the best option is of accomodating my LSD (shaft-wise), I'm going to retain my ~23mm drive shafts for
their lightness.
This means hybridising the drive flanges and shortening my shafts (again).
This is the result so far:
Hybrid 1
Hybrid 2
note the damage caused by someone cack-handedly trying to reuse a can.
Now for the welding.....gulp.
A couple of questions regarding these.
Are they allowed to be welded under IVA rules?
Will the welds hold on these hardened parts?
I'm post IVA here so unless they have a welded shaft detector van then I recon it should be ok.
With regards to the welding....I'm going to use 29 % Chrome 9% Nickel rods (29/9's) that are designed for hard and dissimilar steels.
They've proved very reliable in the past and are superior to anything used to weld propshafts (which are rough cast ends welded to bits of
tube)
One way to find out i suppose....
I reckon as long as they are welded properly they will be ok.
Generally a broken driveshaft doesnt do too much damage anyway. Its breaking a prop you need to worry about!
I have broken a few half shafts on track cars, makes you jump when they go though!
