Type 9 Mounting Options
Bumble - 20/8/09 at 09:06 AM

Can I please see some pics of how people have mounted type 9's to the chassis. Mine has a fairly large mounting flange with rubber box on it that is making it hard to mount far enough back.
Cheers.

Ditch the standard Ford mounting and use the Westfield item (search Westfiled online store - about £8-9 IIRC) which is much smaller and almost solid too.

I found the westfield one made my gearbox sit about an inch too high in my indy.

I actually milled a new mount plate so I could use engine mounts, worked perfectly

In my first design I used a Escort Mk1 1100 4-speed gearbox. It had as wide flange with rubber centerblock for mounting the gearbox. I cut the flange and drilled new holes to fit brackets in my transmission tunnel.

Mr Whippy, would you be able to post a pic of your design? I am looking for some hints for mounting my mt75 gearbox.

Sorry, I have no pics online at the moment. I'll check tonight at home. I cannot make new pictures because I am rebuilding from xflow + type 5 (?) to Zetec + mt75.

westfield, caterham and the 4 speed mounts are all the same

I got mine from westfield, but caterham are cheaper at the moment....

To use the Westfield mount on an Indy you will need to either make up a bolted or welded bracket to hold the Westy mount a bit lower than it would be if bolted up to the the chassis flanges.

I just used a piece of 5mm x 30mm steel bar with some spacers to drop the mount down.

Others have cut . burnt the rubber out of the standard Sierra mount and attached the Westy mount inside the metal part of it.

This is all I have from the old situation. Unfortunately nothing with gearbox in situ.

Ok....thanks for the advice so far.....so getting a Caterham/Westy Rubber mount seems the way to go. Apologies for my ignorance but just want to be clear.
There are 2 flanges welded to the lower trans tunnel. The gearbox sits on these and is bolted through them with the rubber in cearance - correct? See pic attached.....as you can see the std rubber on my type 9 is too big to fit between the flanges which do appear rather wide. Simple mod to fix but want to be sure. Second pic shows how I think the box is supposed to sit on the flanges (albeit much further back. Hopefully I've got this right....if not I'm sure you'll tell me.
Thanks,

That's how mine is fitted, but needed to be spaced to make it even lower than it would be if botled straight up to the underside of the flanges.
