What is the most accurate way to measure up for getting a prop made. I have been told that the distance the manufacturer will require will be from the oil seal at the back of the gearbox to the diff flange. Now depending on what point on the oil seal and what point on the diff flange you measure to / from there could be quite a difference.

The important is to measure the distance when the shaft is at its shortest, ie measure at the full bump, full rebound and mid postion. Measure centre to centre by bridging across each flange/oil sel face with a straight edge, use the shortest mesurement a shaft which is 25mm short of the ideal length should be ok but one which is 5 mm long could cause real problems.

When I got my propshaft made, I was asked for the same measurements. I took it from the flange of the diff, to the start of the oil seal, outside. The manufacture of the prop will allow for axle movement.

when i told them the length for mine, they knocked another 20 odd mm off anyway. that was after i'd told them it was IRS as well, so maybe they were just being safe.

Had one made about a month ago. Gave them length from diff flange to end of gearbox, told them what gearbox type it was and what diff type it was, they also wanted to know the diameter of the diff flange. Fits a treat.

Dunning and Fairbank (Leeds) have been very helpful and have quoted me £85 (ex VAT and del) for a type 9 box to sierra diff prop.

Unless anyone knows anyone better I be using them.

I was asked the same question oil seal to flang, and the type of gear box/axle.

Cost £80 all in and was done within 2 days, very good workmanship, If I need another prop for anything I would go back.
