Been having more of a measure up of my flywheel trying to determine what it is from.
The flex plate which was attached to the engine measures 290mm diameter (across the teeth) and has 112 teeth.
The flywheel measures 285mm and has 110 teeth.
Whats the betting that the flywheel wont engage with the starter properly?

David
Is the pitch of the teeth the same?
If it is it'll work...but don't blame me if it doesn't!
2.5mm difference in radius isn't enough to stop the gears engaging. Given the amount of wear you sometimes see on starter rings and they still
work my money is on it working. It won't be perfect but...
adrian
It will probably work, but as wear sets in there will be more jams than starts!!
check the starter teeth mesh ok with the ring gear, the mounting holes in the bellhousing will bring the starter to the right place for the
flywheel.
worst case is a different starter
If it doesn't (I think it will) just file some of the rear face of the starter ring gear down, and a smidge off the top.
It doesn't have to survive forever!
i agree with above, i think it will work but wear faster than it shoudl do and cause issues in the end.
hmmmnmm, a smidge under 2 % difference.
if your starter motor is not new, chance are it is worn to at least that amount.
I know bike chains should be replaced at 1 % wear, when they are, the gear/chain does not jump so my reckoning you'll be ok.
maybe.
What's the possibilties on getting a starter with another tooth bigger drive gear?
Thanks guys. This is for the duratec. Everything points to the flywheel I have to being a cvh item, will do some more measurement.
If I can get this to all work its certainly a cheaper option than the others.
The flywheel I want to fit is the one with the smaller diameter.
Just dont a bit of maths:
Circumference of correct ring gear = 911mm and 112 teeth so tooth pitch is 8.13mm
Circumference of the one I want to use = 895mm and 110 teeth so the pitch is also 8.13mm
So the pitches should be right, just a case of how the mesh is.
The starter is bolted to the block on the duratec (not to the bellhousing) so I may be able to modify the starter to bring the mesh correct as long as
there is 2.5mm clearance everywhere
David
Whats the chances of mounting it to the bellhousing as per sierra ?
Its just a case of sierra fly' and starter ?
Just looked at your bellhousing so thats no chance then.
Maybe make up mounts for cvh starter ?

thats a bugger, david
i think i will see whta you come with and then get a flywheel.lol
as i still got some time before i start mine.
