cheers mate. i thought cvh's were transverse, or am i really naive -are there different "types"?

Mostly transverse.But in the Box of pox Sierra they,natrually were proper.For the record there is also a 1.8 pinto fitted to the same.May get confusing.I,ve a 1.8 Cvh in my Locost(Came free with the car you see)

And then there the home brewed ZVH -- a hybrid with CVH top end on a Zetec block -- which seems a bit silly the whole point of the Zetec being the 16 valves but actually makes a super strong performance engine that is relatively cheap to build.

The RWD and FWD CVH engines are very different but a CVH Sierra is a good starting point even if you don't want the 1800 CVH.
The 1800 CVH isn't worth tuning if you find a good one and just want to potter it will be be fine, but if you weant cheap performance look at the Xr3/Orion CVH----loads of go faster bits available cheap on eBay

I should add that installing a FWD CVH requires a bit of clever trickery with engine mounts and an RWD CVH flywheel but once done should you ever decide to fit a Zetec or even build a ZVH thing the bulk of the work is already done as the Zetec bottom end is just a much much improved CVH.
