1.8 silvertop zetec - any good, worth ?
Flick - 8/12/09 at 11:28 PM

basically ive just bought part built kit which comes with a good 1.8 zetec (short sump etc)
all ancs, type 9 bellhousing, type 9, full exhaust system, twin 40's with inlet, emerald engine managment system and loom.

just wanted to know any opinions/power output of this sort of set up and its value if I decide to sell and go for an alternative

Is it a pre-August 95 engine?? If so then build the car with it in and then maybe consider fitting a later 2L zetec after IVA which should give you at least an extra 10bhp very cheaply. Saves having to pass the catalytic converter level emissions that way. You could also just fit some 2L cams into it unless its the higher power version of the 1.8 in which case it'll already have them. From memory there was a 118bhp and a 130bhp version of the 1.8, while the 2L gave 136bhp.

You should get 155- 160bhp or so with the 1.8L with 2L cams.

A 1.8L zetec is worth very little these days - couple of hundred quid at best i'd say.

plenty good enough to have lots and lots of fun. i have a 1600 pinto and its no slouch

IS THERE ANY WAY YOU CAN TELL THE CAMS APART IE - STANDARD 1.8L COMPARED TO HIGHER 1.8/ 2.0L?
THINK IT MAY HAVE 2.0L CAMS FITTED

Iv got a 1.8 zetec in mine with bike carbs. Goes very well indeed. Its got 2 litre cams in, i reckon 150 bhp but never had it rolling roaded.

Id stick with that very good engine and you have the hole set up. If you get it set up right you should see 160bhp.

As for the cams search this site for zetec cams or cam identification. You can tell by the rings on it.

I have the piccies at home il post them up later if you havent found anything.

Save you a job.

I changed from 1.8 to 2.0 blacktop and there isn't a massive difference. 1.8 was a bit smoother, despite being knackered.

by the sounds of whats been done to the engine with carbs and ECU would think its had 130/136 cams fitted but worth a check, as said eairlier worth checking engine number and hence age for emission requirements, i would at this stage especially if pre 95 engine stick with what you have as would expect upto 150bhp if set up ok

1800 silvertop zetecs variations.

Unless the engine has been tinkered with the cam ID can be found from the engine number stamped on the block exhaust side flywheel end near the crank position sensor.

Possible 3 letters and the rest in numbers,i may well end up corrected on this but i'm pretty sure the last letter denotes cam power.

I/I = 90/88 bhp probable 1600

D = 105 bhp
K = 115 bhp
Q = 130 bhp

above would be zetec escort

the 130 engine was fitted in the si models and the cabrio si...the gti got the lower output engine....dont ask me why...

easist way to tell if the engine is still in the donar car is if the car has disc breaks fitted to the rear....if it does its the 130.....

the difference is the cams and throttle body..the butterfly is bigger in diameter.

its an easy engine to turbo aswell. i had 190bhp from mine with a 1.5mm decomp plate, t3 turbo and 5th injector...

That sounds a bit more intresting.......imagine it will be a huge amount of cash to add that sort of set up though

not at all......

i done mine on a budget of 500 squids, and i could probably go cheaper still now....

looks like thats final then - 1.8 zetec turbo it is.

Any chance on a list of parts I will need and any major/akward engine work needed.
Thanks
