I need to order my R1 exhaust from MK.
The non cat version is £180 but they will do one with a cat in for £350 - quite a bit more.
My dilemma is that, with the R1 being a carb version, I'm expecting to do a fair bit of messing around trying to get it in limits for IVA. MK hire out their cat exhaust for £50 a week. I've read on here about people wishing they'd just bought a cat outright after the cost & hassle of repeated hiring. A friend who's restoring a Mk1 Escort also mentioned a government white paper that came out last year giving the police the power to prosecute for removing a cat that was required for emissions control. Anyone know anything about this ?
Obviously i'd rather run without a cat post IVA if I can get away with it. I'm aiming for a Q plate so come MOT time I'm assuming it will still be just a smoke test ?

a whole load of kit car 'Manufacturers' have their exhausts built by them, if not they might have the jig/pattern.

^^ dito, not the simplest thing to get to work, hydrocarbons will probably kill the cat in a short time.. This is why manufactures went to closed loop lamba control as the carbs are marginal with a CAT, hence the rush to EFI when they became a requirement (at least I think that's the story)..

Could you not get MK or similar to build a system with a removable CAT i.e. have them build a link pipe so you can choose to have or not have the CAT.. You could always sell it on after the IVA??

Personally I think it's best to fit an older engine if possible to get around having a CAT for the life of the vehicle (probably not an option at this point).

One of the reasons LADA quit the uk was that they could not afford to get a EFi System.

Ford had to introduce their CFi ( single point ) on the sierra CVH's . Although somehow some Pintos went out during the last year of production???

There were a few Carbed & Catted production cars but they carburettors were very complicated verging on being Singlpoint EFI!!!

I have a carbe ZX9 and an R1 exhaust. I bought one of them universal cats from USA on Ebay and just had soemone weld the two together.
At the mo this combination comes straight off the manifold and I have a link pipe that came with my manifold from MK that I'll be putting in place of the cat when I can find an affordable exhaust.
As for the police having power to do you then I would say we probably always had summat similar anyway but between you and me how many officers do you think will notice or even know what a cat is? Say no more

Don't think the police will care.

I think Roadside VOSA emissions checks may care.

stupid question but what year is your engine?

take a read through this below: sounds like your chances of passing emissions for CAT with carbs are pretty low.

did you remove EFI from engine? why?

ask if anyone else has passed emission with your set up as it could be an expensive purchase that does not get the desired result.


SVA emission

The engine is a 2001 R1 5JJ. They were produced with carbs I didn't remove EFI & replace with carbs. I was worried about getting through IVA with it but MK don't seem to think it'll be a problem, and they've done a few. I think I'll just order the standard exhaust & borrow their cat or get one of those universal ones. Has anyone got a link for the USA ones ? couldn't find them on ebay.

My MK got through SVA with a carbed 5JJ engine, a few tweaks and it was fine. Make sure you get the cat (when you have it) nice and hot though. Seal up ALL holes in the exhaust, otherwise your lambda reading will be way outide the limits.

Thanks James, that makes me feel a lot better. Thought I was going to have real grief.

Think about MOT time as well, if you plan on keeping it for 3years, not sure on the regs but on my V5 it specifies the emissions test, and this is the same as IVA time..
