Change of plan!

Just been offered RS Turbo lump any comments? Better of worse than vx 2lt?

Jon Ison - 16/8/02 at 04:02 PM

not sure which is "best" but for indivduality i would go turbo, scope for tuning and nice noises is endless....

anymore ?

JohnFol - 16/8/02 at 04:12 PM

I'd expect the weight is higher on the turbo due to extra components, but power output would be higher. As a rough rule a turbo'd engine equates to 1.7 times the capacity of normally aspirated. ie a 1 litre turbo is about the same as a 1.7 non-turbo

A word of caution would be the additional components equates to more to fit and more to go wrong.

However I would agree with Jon.

The turbo will also be injection so you've got the hassle of fitting all that aswell, more electronics, high pressure fuel lines etc. They can make a lot of power though with the right bits and bobs. (Standard around 130-5bhp)

I'll buy it for my XR2000 if you don't!

fitting injection is no problem.

If all things were as easy my car would have been built a year ago!

The pressure lines are only 40 psi and if you get the loom and control unit from the donor, with a haynes wiring diagram, its not that hard.

Thanks. As it is im going back to the 2lt 8v Vx engine. 130bhp similar to turbo but with no extra wear and tear on car when turbo fires. Plus is that as standard not after using a turbo. One question i would like to know though. Other than for removing the Injection system from it is there any other reason to put webbers on the Vx. As far as i know the Injection system is quite simple and works well and as far as webbers go they need balancing all the time so if its just to make things easier does it?

stephen_gusterson - 17/8/02 at 09:55 PM

as far as i can see, people remove the injection to reduce the engine height. Quite often the plegnum chamber is the highest thing. Side draft carbs dont take up height.

The may also be more tuning oppotunities with carbs.

Thanks im going to try and fit the vx engine ito a book chassis so if i loose a little hight from the engine buy adding the webbers and removing the injection setup that has to be worth it.

johnston - 17/8/02 at 11:54 PM

i would stick with the injection and either modify the bonnet to suit or make a new phlenum chamber at the end of the day if people make the pinto fit and is one tall sob....

the reason i say dump the webbers is cos i dont no wot its like over there but i no over here its gettin a bitch to get through the emmissions with webbers

Gremlin - 17/8/02 at 11:58 PM

Doh now im back to square one! Yes or no both have good sides! Anyone know how much shorter the Vx lump is roughly compared with the pinto?

stephen_gusterson - 18/8/02 at 11:31 AM

i am of the opinion, from what i have read, the shortening the plengnum isnt a good idea. Its been sised to suit the air flow, and shortening the inlet tracts, for instance, can lower the torque. I know this from looking at tuning kits for the XJ-S I used to have.

I think im going to scrap the Vx engine idea. Its my first locost and am buying the chassis so i want an engine that i can pritty much drop in with out doing any chassis mods and most companys dont do mounts for the Vx. Now not sure wether to go back to X Flow until on the road the mad to bike engine or go for a big old 2lt pinto.? Anyone know BHP of the pinto and what sort of 0-60?

johnston - 19/8/02 at 04:17 PM

i wouldnt scrap the vx idea yet it can be a gd goin engine at the end of the day the injection/carbs arguement is just a case of each to his own

Jon Ison - 19/8/02 at 04:55 PM

agree, fit the vx, it will be worth it in the end..... a local locost as just sailed the emissions running 48's, so it can be done.........

johnston - 19/8/02 at 10:23 PM

try this one for the inlet mani for your injection http://www.sdsefi.com/techinta.htm

and basic theory http://www.sdsefi.com/techtheo.htm

Gremlin - 19/8/02 at 11:39 PM

Things have changed again. Im buying a MK Indy chassis and because im buying dont want to tamper to much. I dont think MK do a Vx setup chassis so i wont just be able to dump the engine in as i would the pinto 2lt. I may be wrong? Im looking at getting car on road as easy as possible then possibly going bike later anyway!

Metal Hippy™ - 20/8/02 at 12:09 AM

Surely you MUST know somebody that can make a set of mounts that'd fit a Vauxhall engine?

Isn't it one of the easiest things to change on a chassis for somebody that can weld?

Seems a shame to use a hefty Pinto when you've got better engines available to you for the sake of a day working on mounts.

Just my tuppence worth.

Jon Ison - 20/8/02 at 08:41 AM

but hippy, the guy mentioned a proper engine.......you know the type....

Gremlin - 20/8/02 at 08:44 AM

Possibly! I will have the chassis made to take the pinto and if i can find someone i will have it modified. I was looking at having work done on the pinto anyway and ultimatly looking for a bike engine car.

Jon Ison - 20/8/02 at 08:57 AM

like i said, proper motor, the change from pinto to bike aint hard.......don't waste money tuning the pinto, save it for bike engine mounts.......

Gremlin - 20/8/02 at 02:41 PM

Once i get pinto and car running and hopefully through sva then look at it what sort of money am i looking for the blade?

dont know 0 - 60 but.....

for 4 cyl sierra engines are :

1.6 = 75hp
1.8 = 90hp (non cvh)
2.0 = 105 carb
2.0 = 115 injection
2.0 DOHC = 125 injection

And that from someone using a straight BMW 3.5 litre V6 !!!!!!!!!!!

The f*cking thing ain't no chuffin' V6.

Anyway, the 3.5 BMW isn't actually as heavy as you might imagine.

Plus it's a bloody sight more powerful and torquey than a Pinto.

Which would you rather use?

Gremlin - 21/8/02 at 11:21 AM

I just want an engine that will drop straight into a MK Indy chassis without doing any modification to the chassis.

I would like plenty of power but dont have loads of cash and will save up eventually for a bike engine.
