Which engine paint amd aluminium cleaning help
blockhead_rich - 16/2/10 at 09:21 PM

Hi
I'll soon need to paint my new engine block. What is the best paint to use that is durable and gives a good finish?

Also, what's best for cleaning cast aluminum parts (throttle bodies)? I don't want to shot blast them though.

For the ali parts cillit bang works well. Spray on, leave for 30secs then scrub with a stiff brush then wash off with clean water.

For paint....engine paint is a good start

Oh I hadn't thought of actually using engine paint?!

I've used VHT before but it only give a matt finish and I'd prefer a gloss one.....

I'll try cillit bang...

The brake caliper paint kits are good for engines.

2k very durable and gloss, I just wish I had done the chassis with it

not wanting to hijack, how clean of surface (c)rust does the block have to be before painting? i bought paint ages ago, while my engine was being built. never got round to painting it and put the engine in the car. its been like that for about 2 years now, and its a bit crusty. next time the engine's out i'll paint it. not really wanting to have to wire brush it though, and risk getting bits in the engine.
can i put some of that rust reversing type stuff on first, and paint on that?

If you want it to stick it's got to be back to metal.. Lot's of elbo grease or do as I do don't worry about it, small oil leak= car preservation system etc etc.. All I have done is a good clean down with paraffin (and a paraffin gun+brushes), made a world of difference..

If I was re-building the engine then I would clean and paint..

well, i'll paint it, if it sticks it stick, if not, then brush some oil on lol.
i meant to ask the builder to paint the block while he had it stripped, but i forgot
cheers
