Duplex Timing on a V8
Irony - 17/2/10 at 10:08 AM

After taking my timing cover off my V8 I find more evidence that the engine has been rebuilt in the past. The standard timing cover came off and revealled a shiny very new looking duplex timing unit.

Does anyone know the exceptable chain stretch (it looks brand new, I could have put on yesterday)? And how you get it off. Do I need a gear puller or can I just hammer it off with a suitable bit of wood?

Cheers

Hammer the chain off with a bit of wood??? hope not!

There should be a tensioner that can be released to give you some slack.

Acceptable slack should be between 5 and 10mm?

When I said Hammer I meant, use a bit of dowel to gently tap the gears off the shaft. I don't recall any sort of tensioner.

no tensioner ( its 60's technology we are talking about ).

suspect it is seized on you need to slyde it off the crank and the cam in unison.

to unseize it I have always suceeded with a bit of gentle tapping with nylon mallet.

No tensioner on an RV8. I think they are just on a keyway.

Damn - just spotted AgriV8's post and wasted some electrons!

being pedantic - I don't think you wasted any electrons - you just moved some about!

That's ok then. I don't feel so bad now

There are pullers, I have one, look for 3 threaded holes in the cam gear should be SAE thread.

As all above, you should be able to pull off both, once retaining bolt on cam pulley is undone. Should just require a little wriggling or at worst a puller.

Oh and duplex chain was standard.

The standard chain was not a Duplex - The standard chain is a Morse. A Duplex requires two rows of rollers which means in effect two sprockets on each component. The Morse has one row of wide teeth and is in short terms cr4p.
