Rad fan mounts
flak monkey - 28/2/10 at 09:41 PM

Looking for inspiration of how to mount my rad fan.

Its going to be mounted on the back of the radiator, which has the std polo mounting positions. I am also using these points to attach the rad to the chassis.

Pics would be great if anyone has some

TIA,
David

We made a radiator sized backplate and cut most of it away then mounted our two fans to that. It fixes to the bosses on the sides of the rad.
It is fully ducted, fore and aft. ( Ducting not finished in pic)
Fans are from an Aprilia RSV and are made by SPAL. £10 each.
We've had no cooling problems so far.
Geoff.

i used the cable tie kind of things that go through the rad, nice and easy to put on

Here you go. I have this in my westy and it makes the whole job of fitting the rad fan very easy and neat.

ETA: you could copy design and make your own out of a piece of ali. Very locost

Er.....gentleman, this is Locost, this is what we did, jumbo cable ties pulled really tight, works a treat, total cost about 5p. Rescued attachment c1.jpg

I got a polo radiator fan and shroud complete from a breaker. Cost me about £8 I think.

However, it's not shifting enough air to keep my RV8 cool in traffic so I'm going to have to get something bigger or perhaps twin fans. I'm also seriously considering mounting the radiator inside the nosecone like the westfield SEight and having a duct to vent hot air upward over the bonnet rather than through the engine bay. Should help to keep the engine bay cooler.

I wouldn't recommend the tie wraps through the core method as I've heard of some people having trouble with it bursting the radiator due to chaffing.

Here's mine... The bosses were tapped out to M6 so the rad can be bolted to the backplate. 1 year later, it's still attached!

Pics of mine.

Lots of holes drilled for lightness, and thin bar used to as to minimise restrictions on air flow.

You can see my mounts on the front of the radiator. I wanted them small, light and stiff so made them from anodised U section from B&Q. The rad end of each mount is spaced with a piece of ally tube to butt the fan up against the rad.
