This is the standard duratec cooling layout most of the escort boys use (see below)
I need to plumb in my header tank, and I know the proper place to put the pipe is in in where the blue hose is from the heater, however there is a lot
of pipes around this area now and getting a hose from the header tank on the footwells to the stat on the front of the engine would be a bit tight.
In trying to keep the plumbing as neat as possible, could the header tank be connected into the red heater hose? I think that it would just push water
into the header tank due to the flow so I dont think it would work. However, I know I ain't always right so would like to know what others
think!

Can you tap into the bottom radiator hose?
Shouldn't be a problem on the red side, the water will only fill up the header tank if you leave the cap off!

For best results the header/expansion tank outlet needs to be plumbed into the cold return from the radiator to the water pump. This will then draw
circulation through the tank and give the rad and top of engine the air bleeding effect you are trying to achieve.
Or the alternative setup is to place a expansion tank in line on the engine to rad. Assuming this is the highest point in the system it will allow the
air to collect and provide room for expansion. This is exactly how we plum the zetec's and Duratec's in our Golds. There should be some pics
around in my archive or web site. It provides the simplest layout. And the lightest.

Thanks Matt, sounds like my first thoughts were correct. I'll have to find a route through the other pipes to get to the stat housing, which will
effectively plumb it into the return from the radiator to block.

i can't get my head round that diagram. there seems to be arrows pointing both directions and everything

The header tank won't know that its connected to the return, (unless you tell it of course) all it will know is that it is connected to a 'T' with a flow going along the main leg.

Although it dose seem to work more favorably if the header return is receiving as good a draw as is possible.
