can anyone confirm this is the correct location for the engine code? spent weeks trying to find it and just found this image, however all i have there
is a very pitted surface with no sign of any numbers or letters

Why not buy a scrapper engine/block that has an engine number on it then stamp the scrappers numbers onto you good one, then grind off the scrappers
engine number, at least you'll now it still unique.
Can't think of another cheaper solution sorry.

So... you'd have a receipt for the engine block and you know its not nicked, agreed to do a proper job would mean a spacer template to be made,
(a bit of flat bar with a line of holes drilled in it so the punch goes through in a s nice straight line) and the engine taking out.
The other option is to flog them both and buy an engine that does have a number already on.

Zetec engines only have numbers on them if they are the original engine.
Warranty or new engines don't come with a number. Dealers usually stamp the number from the old engine when they replace it.
Just go down the scrappy yard and get a number off one... don't forget to chisel it off tho...
the engine number is just needed to prove the engine age for emmisions isnt it?
i know the engine is a 98 from the person i brought it off, so i know ill need a cat. but have emission standards changed?
from reading the IVA manual if you cant prove the engine age they test it to standard figures of 0.2% CO and HC 200ppm. or am i dreaming to get that
from a 12 year old engine?

Later engines had like an etched number You can see yours had one.
Its actually very easy to stamp on a new number- even in the car. I used a set of stamps the right size and stuck each one in the end of a long socket extension. One firm whack with a hammer for each stamp and hey presto! The metal is relatively soft and easy to stamp. Passed sva and dvla inspection with no questions asked- engine number was *borrowed* from a scrap mondeo at the local breakers!
so if i find a pre 95 ford in a scrappy and take the code off that? polish up the plate and stamp it in?
feel alot better about this now
