Dyno results
flak monkey - 17/5/10 at 03:40 PM

Well, just back from Atspeed in Essex. Firstly I must say that they have done a brilliant job on the car considering the poor state of tune when it arrived. Very friendly and knowledgable too so highly recommended by me...

Set off at 5:30 this morning, so a little tired. Arrived at dyno around 8:45 due to traffic

Arrived and there was a Mk2 (i think) Cortina on the rollers fitted with bike carbs. Very nice car.

Got mine on the rollers about 915 and strapped down. All the usual checks carried out. Lamda and boost connected up etc etc.

No major problems other thank chucking a load of water over the floor in the first hour. No belt or clutch slip which was what I was concerned about.

Took around 3 hours all together.

A little nerve racking to start with, but soon settled in and spent most of my time in the dyno bay being nosey!

Final results were less than I was hoping for, but never mind. There's less boost than I was aiming for which is the main reason why. It made around 0.8bar (12psi) when everything was really hot - so will probably make a little more on the road where the IAT are a little lower.

I think the end result was good considering its on standard duratec cams and its essentially all bodged together in my garage!

Final result...

223.4bhp and 195.5lbft at the wheels - add 20% for losses (as recommended by Atspeed) and thats a healthy 268bhp and 230lbft at the flywheel.

Or the well proven, add 10bhp then divide by 0.88 gives 265bhp, so there we go

That said its whats at the wheels that counts!

Peak power at 6000rpm and torque at 5300rpm. So the limiter is now fixed at 7k although the run stops at 6500rpm.

From 3000rpm up theres 150lbft at the wheels.

I am just uploading some vids to youtube and will post links when they are done (about an hour!)

Congratulations! I think it's a result on a homebrew blower installation when it doesn't blow up on the dyno so actually getting to the end to get a Bhp is (IMHO) a blooming good result!

You can always fit a smaller pulley when you want to go for max power

Andy D - 17/5/10 at 03:46 PM

So, have you scared yourself on the road yet?

big-vee-twin - 17/5/10 at 03:59 PM

Nice one David, did you ask the Dyno guys how much the go faster stripe makes at the fly wheel LOL.

Seriously - nice job and really

02GF74 - 17/5/10 at 04:01 PM

good job, looks like the stripes made all the difference.

did they get matching tie-down straps just for you?

flak monkey - 17/5/10 at 04:05 PM

Yep straps specially picked to complement the car!

Its pretty scary once you get over 4000rpm as it really starts to scream then!

nick205 - 17/5/10 at 04:15 PM

Sounds like a good day all round

More important (IMO) than actual numbers, how different did it feel on the drive home?

After having mine set-up on the RR, the outright power figures didn't change greatly, but the car felt like it had really woken up in terms of response and useability.

flak monkey - 17/5/10 at 04:30 PM

Now much better on the road, far, far better than I ever achieved with datalogging on megasquirt and 1000miles of driving!

Crusing is much smoother and looks like its going to be more economical as well though I havent worked it out yet.

Also much more responsive when driving hard.

Nice car and a great result!

What Video camera are you using?

Steve

flak monkey - 17/5/10 at 04:47 PM

Thanks

The vid is off my Lumix TZ5 camera.

iank - 17/5/10 at 04:55 PM

Looking good, and pretty relaxed and uneventful compared with some of the roller video's you see.

Nice result with what sounds like the potential for more later if you feel the need.

l0rd - 17/5/10 at 04:57 PM

You got a great result.

Now, go back to the garage and put some extra support on that front right vibrating arch

carpmart - 17/5/10 at 05:06 PM

Good numbers IMHO! Well done!

eddie99 - 17/5/10 at 05:07 PM

Well done buddy, glad you've got it to that stage!!!! Can't wait to see it at Newark now!

pdm - 17/5/10 at 05:12 PM

sounds awesome on the vid

clairetoo - 17/5/10 at 05:41 PM

Very nice

atspeed racing - 17/5/10 at 05:50 PM

glad you are pleased with the service and the tune.

kit cars are always a little tricky to map, any slight problems are exaggerated because the cars are so light, so getting them to drive smooth can take some doing, particularly boosted set ups.

any problems with the car or cold start dont hesitate to give us a call.

- colin.

franky - 17/5/10 at 06:18 PM

Got to be chuffed with that, well over 100bhp more than standard

More importantly its a nice smooth curve and makes good power everywhere!

Well done that man.

flak monkey - 17/5/10 at 06:24 PM

Yes very, very pleased with the result and the fact I didnt have any problems on the dyno have reassured me too.

I will have a play around with the cold start and throttle stop some more over the next few evenings . Also very light throttle (4% or so) at 2000rpm is a touch lean, one of those sites you would never find on the dyno but I do get there sometimes when in traffic.

jeffw - 17/5/10 at 06:26 PM

Excellent result. I was planning on taking my Phoenix to AT once the engine is in to map the Megasquirt and you have just confirmed my choice.

Hugh_ - 17/5/10 at 08:45 PM

Nice vid and good numbers. Off side cycle wing looks a little loose/flappy in the vid though...

Nice one David, thats a good result, certainly a quick machine and should be dead reliable at that power too!

Re. the megasquirt, that echoes my experience. Don't like to say it on here as a lot of people are using it, but my very limited dealings just led me back to using "proper" systems again (penny wise and pound foolish and all that! )

dlatch - 17/5/10 at 08:59 PM

round of applause

very impressed with the results myself and obvious there is more there with more boost if needed

FASTdan - 17/5/10 at 09:13 PM

awesome, good result

flak monkey - 18/5/10 at 06:15 AM

Re the cylce wing... it looks a little odd in the vid but it doesnt move much on the road. The vibration on the dyno was very low frequency which seems to make the wings move around.

As Nat says the good thing is it *should* be reliable at that sort of power. And its still enough to spin the wheels in 3rd and 4th if you want to.

The plan is to enjoy it now and use it the rest of the year.

flak monkey - 18/5/10 at 03:56 PM

Trust me to misread the graph

Torque was actually 205.4lbft @ 5400rpm so 246lbft at the flywheel.

Really should check things properly in my excitement!

This is actually quite interesting as the Caterham X330 (330bhp) only made 220lbft at the flywheel but that was on a single throttle body. So there are advantages to running multiple throttle plates.
