So the head is now off and I'm searching for an OHV valve compressor (all the latest types are for OHC).

Decided to remove sump and check the bottom end. All looked OK. Then removed front timing cover. Hmmm - maybe replace the front oil seal. Then I noticed the oil flinger disc seemed to be almost touching the timing chain. Looked like it had been assembled on wrong way. Here's how it looked on removal : -

BTW - Haynes manual pic appears to show the conical form facing away from the chain. Anyone confirm this should be the case?

Brief check of the bearings indicated they looked OK. No undue play, no signs of excessive wear.
Still troubled by the thought of oil disc swarf dropping into the sump!

The face you have showing in your picture, should be facing the timing cover.

Valve spring compressor, doesn't matter if its an OHV or OHC it still does the same thing. Most valve spring compressors are of a standard size. And different adaptors are available for the spring end of the compressor.
Facom (no connection) make a very good one.
