Performance from silencers
Mark Allanson - 9/8/10 at 09:01 PM

I have used a silencer from a 1.9 tdi Passat for 5 years and 15k miles but it started looking scruffy

So I got a nice new sporty one from a 1300GSX Suzuki, much prettier and bound to make the car faster

Unfortunately the car is now 10mph slower across the board - I am totally puzzled

too restrictive ?

bigrich - 9/8/10 at 09:05 PM

unfortunately the suzuki 1300 uses 2 of these to flow 175 bhp so you probably have lost a big chunk of power, bet its quiet though

That can will be horribly baffled.... there is a reason why they are so cheap on ebay, first thing you do is change the can.

Bet you will struggle to drop a marble in one end and shake out the other.

The solution is to cut off the end, drag out the guts and replace with a perforated tube and wadding, then let the noise do your head in!

I have checked the performance against a known benchmark

I lend the car to 'The Stig' who drives from a standing start at the roundabout and checks the speed as he goes under the first bridge. It is normally 105mph, but is only 95mph now.

'The Stig' is really helpful in this respect, and has his own insurance!

It's damn near silent! All you can hear is the click of the injectors at anything above 1200rpm

I didn't realise that it used 2, I assumed that 1300 at 12,000rpm would be able to absorb the gasses from 1993cc at 6000rpm

First thing bikers do when they buy a new bike buy new cans to increase BHP and noise

bigrich - 9/8/10 at 09:17 PM

my suzuki bandit has a similar silencer as standard and makes 98 bhp, fit a free flow race can and the same bike makes 120 bhp and a shed load more torque. oh and quite a bit more noise.

Anyone want to buy a guaranteed IVA pass silencer?

the obvious one is an R1 good enough for over 150 bhp and quiet

Mark Allanson - 9/8/10 at 09:26 PM

ebay here I come

daniel mason - 9/8/10 at 09:27 PM

do not get a race can. i had a nice stainless silencer on a zx9 powered car, changed to titanium racefit can and could not handle the noise. it was like nothing i have ever heard and painful at cruising speeds (50 mph)

will121 - 9/8/10 at 09:39 PM

also would think can with a outlet angled down away from the rear wheel arch, looks loke the one you have is straight outlet and about 10" away, supprising how hot exhaust gasses at full chat are straight onto the fibreglass arch

the next day I fitted a 45° tail pipe from a 1998 M5, I still have the pair of stainless silencers if they are of any use to anyone

Mark Allanson - 9/8/10 at 09:58 PM

How many silencers does a Hayabusa have?

imp paul - 9/8/10 at 10:02 PM
