I finally have my donor a G reg sierra 2lt. It has all the bits i want but has a DOHC engine! You will have to excuse my ignorance and spelling but
that means it is a pinto doesnt it?
Not cost me anything so if i cant use it i will strip other bit and scrap it. If it is a pinto is it any good and does it have same mounts as the SOHC
pinto?
Whats the main differnces?
If it is not a pinto can i use the MT75 gearbox with a pinto if i can get hold of just the lump?
AFAIK that's not a pinto cos it's 16v. It's more like an early Zetec actually.
Also, I think the exhaust and intake sides are swapped over (ie the exhaust is on the passenger side not the driver side).
DC
Completly different from Zetec, very heavy, chane driven cams, relativly poor power output and limited tuning potential. Best used as an anchor..............and no, It's not a pinto.
I used to have a G reg 16v sierra Ghia and I'm sure it had belt driven cams.
It was EFI - I don't know if they all were - but it was around 130bhp in standard form and went well (certainly not much worse than my current 16v
vectra that has the 16v ecotec that everyone raves about) - sounds to me like a lot less effort than all the tuning that smaller engines and pintos
require.
I still don't understand why every one hates them!
Yeah chain drive though it was naff. Its ok i will us other bits and have someone who wants to swap gearbox MT75 for a type 9 if i dont want it! So
all i need is pinto lunp.
oh well i will get most my parts from it!
You don't want a Pinto lump unless you can help it (sorry all those that have them). The main reason being that it's stupidly tall and very top
heavy. Try and get your hands on a 1.6 Crossflow or a 1.8 CVH like mine (but change the head to an XR2 one 'cos they're crap otherwise) Much shorter
and not so heavy to lug about!
Chris
ChrisW,
What's involved in swapping heads between 1.8 CVH (what I have) and XR2 (presumably 1.6).
Thanks V Much

Seems like you've got the same sierra as me!!
From what I have found out it's not actually a 16v but only 8v, still with two cams (Double Over Head Cam, DOHC). It came with the Sierra GLS model
as a replacement for the 2.0l pinto. It makes more power in standard form, 125bhp, which should give a briskish performance.
You will probably have problems with the fuel injection intake as the back of it sits high within the engine bay.
As far as the cams are concerned I can't remember if it is belt or chain driven but I have heard warnings to check these out on higher milage cars.
Only other thing I have found out, is that if the engine is allowed to run hot, then it can cause the head to warp or crack.
Finally it seems that not many people are using these engines (I made the same assumption as you when I first picked up the car) so backup is going to
be hard to find (if you find out anything then please let me know!!)
Regards
Dave
Chain driven, bit fiddly to change but not exceptionaly difficult. I *think* its basically a Pinto with a DOHC head, I've also heard you can swap
heads with the 16 valve version (Escort RS 2000 and also on some Granada) for an extra 20 hp or so.
They're not that popular mainly because of the lack of tuning bits off the shelf.
HTH
nothin to do with the pinto was supposed 2b a replacement but then the zetec came out
u have the i4 (i think) it was in sierras granda's and the tranny's there was a 8v dohc and a 16v version and if my memory is correct ht racing build
200bhp+ versions of the 16v
it has a reputation like the cvh some people reckon their underrated others think their anchors
but like i said ht racing are the boys for info
only one werd needed to describe these engines(dohc 8 v)RUBBISH.imho of course

early DOHC engines had carbs, on high milage engines chain and tensioner must be changed as the chain may break, good goers plenty of power. do you want to spend £120 on a cam, £200 on pistons,£200 on webers,£## on a head, ect when you can get the same power from stock engine
