I have spent the evening grinding my sump so my new starter will fit. I now want to check the starter works.
If I put a jump lead from a battery negative to the gearbox, then the other lead from the posative terminal to the 2 connectors on the back of the
starter will the engine turn over? Or is that not a good idea?
grinding the sump down still doesnt give enough clearance if it is the 1.8 starter. I have had a section cut out and another section welde to the inside of the sump to give adequate clearance and prevent the starter entering the bell housing at an angle
I got 2 starters from 2 different motor factors. At both places I asked for a LR707 as suggested. As you can see in the pictures the starters are
completely different.
The thinner one seems to fit with out modifing the lip of the sump.

Is there anyway I can test this works?
If you look and see which terminal has a wire leading into the motor body then that is the one to apply live too, you could just use a couple of jump
leads to connect it, I would also remove the plugs to make it easier to turn the engine as you wont get full current flow this way.
